Where are the real freeware game sites at?
Where are the real freeware game sites at? I mean seriously it's like the internet lost it's clue. Use to be you do a search for freeware games and you got actual freeware games people designed and released for free. You could find games like NetDiaspora which was a space trading java script based mmo back in the day and games like Pac-Man clones like Apac among a wide variety of other types of games out there. Now all you get is abandonware games.:steamfacepalm:

I am trying to find a specific game I can't recall the name of that may have been called something worlds or something quest. You downloaded this client and it was kind of like one of those flash games basically where you could either play the default world or download and play users custom created worlds and you'd fight dragons and creatures and could have pets and stuff in it. You could even purchase a gold character or account to it if you wanted to donate to it. It was an awesome time passer game for what it was. Does this game sound familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance.:steamhappy:

Those usually have pirated games on them. Very few games are really freeware. That's just a term pirates use to justify stealing games.

There are still plenty of free games portals out there, so the concept is not dying, probably quite the reverse.

The problem is of course, the nature of the beast - it's free. As such, they need some form of revenue (usually advertising) to run. Because of this, their existence is tenuous, so games and sites will come and go.

I wish you all the best, but if you can't recall what the game was and at least who hosted it, you stand very little chance of success. That doesn't mean you shouldn't ask. Just to be aware is all.

I'm fairly sure that's not what he's referring to.

There are tons of true free games sites out there - Kongregate or itch.io being the most prevalent.

Thanks mates. I appreciate it. And ya crunchyfrog is right. I am talking about finding a site like the old school legit sites that used to be out there where people would design and create content and different types of games and then release them. Actual real freeware.

Sorta why I am getting irritated with my search results because it's like they don't know the difference anymore and honestly I've only seen one abandonware site I can say I respect because if a game title is still being sold they reference link you to either the Steam or GOG page for that actual game.

The actual freeware sites I went to seem to no longer exist so unless I get lucky and can find a copy of the game on an old disk or hard drive or remember the name I'll probably have a hard time finding it. lol Which is sad really because they had a lot of really decent titles and creations on the sites I used to frequent.

Anyway thanks again for the help mates and thanks for the link and site recommendation cSg|mc-Hotsauce. I appreciate it mate.:steamhappy:

Just a thought off the top of my head - have you checked the Wayback Machine to see if you can find the site that might be dead now?

It might not be much help, but it stirs some memory it can help.

I think we kind of "lost" things like Aminet somewhere along the way, if something like that ever existed for PC in the first place -- large repositories of freeware, run on non-commercial university servers.

Thanks mate. That was a good suggestion. I did remember the original site I first found it at outside of the original web site for the game itself when I seen the name in one of my searches that I first found it at which was Game Hippo and tried hitting the wayback machine, but the search isn't working so I'll have to check back later with it. They seem to be having issues today which is just my luck. lol Good call though. Thanks for that mate. :steamhappy:

I agree I think we did. It's sort of the same as trying to find old mods for older game titles now days. They are just really hard to come by. We did have one site that was really popular called Game Hippo. I'll leave a link to an article explaining what it was for anyone who hasn't ever heard of it before.

I kept blanking on the name, but when I seen this it came back to me. lol This site used to have a buffet of freeware titles and absolutely no pop ups or ads what so ever on it that I can recall ever seeing. :steamhappy:

You're always welcome. I try to offer what help I can come up with, and ofttimes just throwing ideas around can work wonders.

Plus, I have a special place in my heart for people who are tying to track down games, books, records, movies, etc that they used to love but have forgotten.

I'd also like to add that if you still get stuck, by all means go on Reddit and post on r/tipofmyjoystick - I go on there fairly often and help people find games, but many WAY outshine my knowledge, so it's very good.
