Madou Monogatari is basically an easier version of Wizardly or Megami Tensei (some sequels apply 2D top-down view like Final Fantasy). Almost all characters and references in Puyo Puyo series are from this one. The biggest feature is the "fuzzy" parameter, describing every state in fighting WITHOUT mentioning number such as HPs and MPs, but with sentences.
and as for Mini Zombie...just Google Image "madou monogatari mini zombie". Just, again, these are gruesome.
The original game "Madou Monogatari 1-2-3" on MSX was only partially translated.
The PC-98 version contained some different plot points and is considered the "darker" port with more realistic violence and blood etc. This version is not translated whatsoever right now.
They eventually made remakes that have different gameplay and story elements on Sega Game Gear that split the "chapters" into seperate parts. These games are currently fully translated by fans.
They eventually remade the Game Gear version of the first part only, for Sega Genesis. This version is basically a "higher res" version of it's Game Gear counterpart with some added spells and characters. This game got a fan translation last month.
(trivia: this was officially the last Genesis/Mega Drive game to be released in Japan)
As far as I know, the PC Engine version is supposed to have a mixture of elements from both the Genesis port and the original computer game versions. This version is not translated right now.
Each version of the original game (MM 1-2-3) are supposed to be quite different experiences so it's a shame that all of them aren't translated yet. The team that worked on the Sega GG and Genesis ports decided to take a break from the series as well so I wouldn't wait on them to translate the computer games or the PC Engine port.
The next game is an SNES game (Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji) which was fully translated by another team before the Sega games were even translated.
The next is the last official game produced by Compile, simply Madou Monogatari for Sega Saturn. This game is not translated right now.
From what I saw there was another game that came out in 2005 but I can't find any info on it at all.
And finally the latest game is a reboot of sorts that is out on PS Vita and Steam, this is the first and currently the only game to have an official english release. This game is titled "Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God" (Sorcery Saga=Madou Monogatari in english). It's loosely based on the MM 1 plot and is a rogue-like rpg from what I saw. They had to use a new cast since the original characters are owned by Sega after Compile went bankrupt.
