Does it swallow as much RAM?
Some AV software are unnecessary bloatware like Norton.
I've never tried McAfee.
I use malwarebytes which uses minimal RAM / CPU & disk space.
The mbamtray processes isn't as intensive.
MWB offers AV / malware security.
The premium version offers real-time protection and other web options.
Here is a list of AV scores from an independent company.
I like Kaspersky myself, but McAfee seems to be tied, score wise.
I don't consider malwarebytes an AV program, just an anti-malware program. I run both on my system. If I didn't have a life time premium license for MWB, I wouldn't be using it as we have had issues where the real time protection wouldn't start or kept turning off, with no help other then "wait for a patch" from the developer... and several patches latter, it still does it on my wife's computer, so we removed it.
MWB isn't even listed in those tests.
if you want actual virus protection, go with MBAM. the free version of MBAM is basically a search & kill tool, only the premium version has realtime protection but i have MBAM free version and im fine with it.
MBAM will detect most things on scans.
i said most. not all.
but theres Malwarebytes AdwCleaner, which is use too, and it can detect things that MBAM doesnt. MBAM and Malwarebytes Adwcleaner is often all you need, if youre kinda paranoid you can go with ESET or HitmanPro, ive heard those are also some pretty good search & kill tools that cover up the few things that malwarebytes itself cant catch on its own.
Honestly I don't think antiviruses are "needed", as long as you keep good security cautions yourself. But if someone, say, wants to surf unofficial GMod/TF2/CS:S/CS:GO servers, they might actually need an antivirus.
Avast made Win10 screw up a long time ago so I stopped using it and I never used it again.
