Japanese men locked in their bedrooms for years !
Known as hikikomori, the phenomenon of social withdrawal has become increasingly commonplace in Japan. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese shut themselves away, spending months and sometimes years in isolation. The social recluses don’t study or go to work. They retreat into their rooms, rarely venturing out to get food in a convenience store and to communicate with immediate family. One of them is Ito. He spends time listening to music, playing video games and surfing the internet. But he has neither the power nor desire to leave his bedroom, where he has voluntarily locked himself. Unlike his younger brother, Ito was regularly yelled at and hit as a child. His parents, he says, only wanted him to be successful in life. Hikikomori often strikes families, where the fathers spend day and night at work, while the mothers focus entirely on their offspring, particularly the eldest sons. Smothering mothers, bullying at school, social pressure and expectations are among the reasons that push some Japanese into self-imposed confinement. RTD travels to Japan to hear the stories of Ito and others, who ended up trapped inside their bedrooms. We question why the epidemic of hikikomori has gripped modern Japan, and what drives the people into seclusion and how some of them eventually decide to get out. From personal stories of hikikomoris and their relatives, and from those who reach out to them, RTD offers an intimate portrait of Japan’s modern hermits.

It’s not just Japanese men, It’s people in general. I’m not saying it’s common, just that anyone can be a hikikomori.

Does it count if I check on my cats outside? I tend to check how are they doing often.

I heard some Japanese people are locking/isolation themselves in their houses/apartments. It’s kinda gross really, they have problems and they won’t fix it.

Hikikimori sounds a lot like me, except that I do go out from time to time and I do spend time with my family often. I just do not go outside my comfort zone if I can avoid it.
I would be a hikikomori if it weren’t for school. I’ve stopped caring about my eduction, but my parents would never let me just quit. When I finally get independent, I’m never leaving my house.

I don’t want to have to interact with people.

I'd say its more common in Japan though, due to the unchecked capitalism traditional values that place a substancial importance on work and career. All cultures value work, but I think Japan takes it to the extreme. To the point where if you don't opt to become a hikikomori, you opt for suicide.

Japan has a suicide rate of 18.5 per 100,000 in 2016. Only South Korea has a worse suicide rate (26.9). Determined by the World Health Organization.

I mean I don't really blame them for wanting to become hikikomori. Japan is known as the "land of lifetime employment". Who the hell wants to work for as long as they live? I don't know about you, but I work to live. Not live to work. Japan's culture is the opposite though.

Indeed. But it’s not exclusive to Japanese people.
