Is TunnelBear reliable?
A friend suggested it to me. I have no idea if it's any good or not.

McAfee bought out TunnelBear. Service is good if that what you're asking for.

Im glad you commeted on this, since you would probably know about this more than me.

Long story short i clicked on a link that i thought looked legit, then 20 minutes later boom my WIFI goes down.

So i have been looking into using a VPN so that this doesn't happen again. My friend recommended TunnelBear, but i have no idea if this is what i need.

A VPN won't prevent that.

A VPN is so you can't be tracked. It won't prevent you from downloading something (intended or not) malicious. It is for privacy and security (security as in data being encrypted).

Well I question that 1st part about clicking a link, and losing connection like that.

And I don't think VPN will help, unless you're trying to visit a site, or see content that was region lock.

So how would I avoid something like this if it were to happen again? The link the person sent to me looked legit, and I'm actually kinda terrified if they grabbed hold of any personal information. I guess the first thing to do would be to not click on any links sent by random people.

You can also put the link in a Google search or find the site on your own.

Given the situation around the person to begin with, that should have been a red flag not to trust anything sent by him/her.

You are right. I never really thought about this ever happening to me though, and I wouldn't expect the person to have that type of knowledge.

I guess that goes to show you that you can never trust anyone you meet on the internet. Well, now I'm going to be a lot more cautious.

My computer was still connected to my WIFI, but the router itself wasn't working, i knew something was up when i couldn't even load my Email. Sorry if i wasn't clear on that.

Hard to say really with this little info.

Just watch what you click is the only advice I can give really.
