I understand the themes of the movie, numbnuts, but it falls flat when it's put in an action movie where nothing happens. Even Roger Ebert said that the same things had already been said a hundred times when the movie came out in '82, and while I'm always hesitant to bring up reviews from others, I have to agree with him.
Again, if you want a story about Vietnam ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up people, watch Platoon, Apocalypse Now ... literally any movie. They talk about Vietnam ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people up while also having interesting things happen.
Setting aside the emotional bit they tossed in at the end of Rambo (again, which isn't even in the book - and the alternate ending of the movie was Rambo basically killing himself) what happens in the movie?
Some guy goes to a town with a comedically overacted ebil sherrif, he escapes, he acidentally kills a guy in the chopper, they ♥♥♥♥ around in the forrest, he crawls around in a cave a little bit and he blows up some empty buildings. Why even call it an action movie?
I guess the reason I have to wait a few decades is so that I can become senile and too old to like anything with action in it, right? :^)
At least you know how to use Google so there is hope yet.
I watched First Blood years ago and watched most of it again a few months ago after I watched the video that compared the book to the movie. And why do you mention that I know how to use Google? Do you need me to teach you how to use it, gramps?
Again, if I want a PTSD lesson, getting it from an action movie is probably the wrong place ... like trying to learn about medical conditions from watching Grey's Anatomy.
You should try watching a documentary sometime instead. :^) There's some pretty good ones out there that talk about Vietnam, the way soldiers got screwed over and PTSD that are good and actually have educational value about those issues you mentioned.
And while you're checking out those classic 80's movies (okay so maybe Alien 1 was '79, but it's close enough), you should also watch "The Thing" (maybe not the best horror movie ever made, but it's still great in many aspects) and "Commando" (aka The Best Action Movie ever made)
You haven't lived.
Pointless to argue with 13 year old who only throws around ton of assumptions.
And btw if you want to see most accurate depiction of this subject in entertainment try China Beach tv-series instead.
All the CGI in the world will never be as fascinating as watching the sticky, bloody head of someone that fell off grow legs and eye stalks and turn into a spider-like creature, because even though it's just rubber and foam and ♥♥♥♥, it's REAL. (Doom 3 totally stole the upside down spider head from The Thing.)
I also like how you can't know what The Thing really looks like, because all the different versions are different, but similar enough that you can almost get an idea of the original creature from the different components of each monster.
Also, the irony of you calling me 13 and then talk about throwing around assumptions is hilarious.
Again, I understood the point, but it was just haphazardly thrown in at the end (and it wasn't even the original ending) and overall it was an unsatisfying movie, especially as an action movie, which they sold it as.
Sorry if you're too old to understand that. ;)
Rambo tops both. My two 90s idols were Rambo and Indiana Jones. I wanted to be like them so much I did. I went Marine combat infantry, went to war, got out all ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, and now I'm an anthropologist and history teacher. Sadly I never hung on under a one ton, nor have I ran from natives while looting treasures, but I'm pretty close
if you want a lesson on ptsd, just let me know. I fought it alone for a decade before getting help
Best wishes, man
