Then people started using it as a badge of social pride.
Then people started unironically using the label while lording their platform preference over others.
It's like, a typical life cycle of bad memes.

So you are pretty much saying by definition, it's offically a meme now? And as for being a meme, it no longer has purpose or meaning, but rather is merely used by immature individuals as a trigger to gain their sweet, sweet attention they crave online as their parents completely ignore them? Positive or negative attention doesn't matter, it's attention all the same.
Well in that case:

I finally figured out the next gen kids with their memes addiction!
Plus since the average price of a new console is $400 vs. $700-$800 for a decent gaming PC, the fact that someone would have a console and not a PC, was taken to mean they couldn't afford a PC.
Same idea as the whole "Potato" thing when people refer to a outdated under powered PC, although with that people tend to get into pising contests, whereas PC Master Race is more of a title, one that people use too much. It used to be a trigger, but for the most part I think it's lost it's effect.
Personally most of my friends many of whom have been PC gamers for much of their lives, also have consoles and many also got started with consoles (myself included), especially for games that aren't on PC, I myself still have and play Xbox 360, and my PS2 for much the same reason.

You know what's more fun that being stupidly defensive of PC?
Being a PC player but telling the people who are stupidly defensive of PC that consoles are fun too.
I was merely joking with it. You gotta know when to laugh at yourself sometimes :)
If you check out the PC Master Race videos, they too also joke around with the concept. Even go as far as ironically PC Master Race (last year builds) vs PC Master Race (next year builds).

and yea its just a tiredsome bad joke.
And then people started using Steam levels as a badge of social pride and acting as if they are celebrities.
No. Society works that way outside too. The only difference is that in front of a screen in the comfort of your own home it is less stressful (which is good).
But hey: RDR2.
When it comes to specs, PC kills consoles. If anyone says otherwise then you’re an idiot.
thing is that consoles have a set life of about 6 years before they end up locked up in a storage space covered in dust and cobwebs, while the next generation of console comes and does the same thing, it isn't practical.
PC's can continue to be upgraded and old components can always remain useful, even gifting what was a good PC ten years ago can help the less fortunate experience the PC, and it would be more than enough to power through a lot of games for less well off kids to enjoy something nice.
So the PC is just an all round better tool in the long term.
