Because their makers made them like that?

It's for grip, so you aren't constantly slipping every step you take.

Try working outside on pavement when it's raining :v

The design on shoes is for traction on the ground. Look at what the shoe is used for and you will see a different type of design, specific for that function.

Different brand do have different designs, but they will follow the same principals for that function.

For the environment! Tiny little rocks are natures litter to clean up.

It's called tread my man. The people above nailed it.

if you think the average tennis shoe should is bad you would hate mine. I still use my corporate account to buy shoes for crews. Micro tread is the awesome.

Visit classier joints where you aren't forced to walk on gravel to get there.
Also there are places where you have to wear smooth shoes or else you can't dance there.

Minimalist shoes don't have this problem so much and can still have good grip. My Vibram Fivefinger shoes for example. Excellent grip for me. They're the shoes with separate toes. Only problem is it's possible for things like grass to get caught in between the toes, but you can find some other minimalist shoes with pretty good grip too. Walking in them is a lot different from more standard looking gym shoes.

I have to pick out gravel bits and weed burrs from my shoes every time I come back in from doing yard work, it IS a pain in the butt because I don't want that stuff on my freaking CARPET.

But yeah it's good for tread. That's all.

You should see how much dirt and mud non-skid kitchen shoes can hold.

They don't?
Man it's called cleaning your shoes, something almost everyone with a brain does now. If you get some shoe cleaner and a good shoe cleaning brush a little scrubbing can get all that ♥♥♥♥ out of your outsole.
Honestly most actually good shoes these days don't have problems like that. Most actually good shoes also don't have grip patterns.
Not gonna lie more sneaker companies should get with the times and come out with sneakers that have no grip or at least a completely flat, smooth rubber outsole. Way better for dancing and way sleeker, just like most dress shoes or dance sneakers.

Then don't wear shoes inside the house? That's unsanitary and gross in general..

Because if they didn't you'd feel like you were walking on an ice-skating ring 24/7.

There are kung-fu shoes called Feiyue that have almost flat rubber soles that have good grip on solid hard surfaces. Not good on sandy surfaces.

In that case:

Because if they didn't you'd feel like you were walking on an ice-skating ring 24/7, or walking across the Gobi Desert in Feiyue shoes.

In all seriousness, very interesting thing to know. I might have to look a bit more into this, see how these "Feiyue" shoes work.

My sketchers actually have pretty good souls. It's a shame they don't make them anymore or otherwise I would buy a whole bunch.
