Steam hardware surveys proves stupidity of resolution snobs and VR trend....
doesnt matter which gaming forum or comment section I'm on I constantly get resolution snobs crying 'oh you only have 1080p....that's so noob' or '1080p is so yesterday.' Now don't get me wrong here I have both a 4k and a 3840 x1600 monitor but even I'm not stupid enough to think that the majority of gamers have resolutions above 1080p and the latest steam hardware surveys prove that. According to that, only a measely 5.82% of all gamers on steam are using resolutions ABOVE 1080p. In fact the number of gamers gaming at 1080p or lower has INCREASED since last year's survey rofl.

Even when it comes to people saying VR will be the next big trend the numbers don't prove that at all. Only 0.19% of all gamers actually even have a VR headset. I mean you'd think with all the advancements that they've had over the last few years with VR and the advertising and media push behind the tech that number would at least be 1% by now...it's nowhere even close to that. Makes you wonder why such the big push for companies to make VR games...it's not even financially worth it.

Screen resolution doesn't matter - unless the person boasting about it is compensating for something...

VR was always overblown, yet Steam / Valve keeps pushing it religiously. I even have the tag excluded from results in the Steam store, and they still fill my game queue with VR titles. It's pathetic.

Doesn't really prove prove they are stupid since they didn't make any actual claims from the sound of it. Besides, the stuff is expensive and the VR equipment needs a lot of dedication to be functional, so it'll have to be more than just a fade to pick up major traction.

1. Vast majority of steam users are poor or underaged 3rd worlders who only play DOTA 2 / PUBG / CSGO / TF2 at minimum settings on internet cafes with refurbished office computers.

2. VR is an emerging trend. Literally nobody said it would be the norm already.
I don't even see it being affordable nor practical for most gamers in two decades. It took ages for 3D graphics to take off, but I'm glad it did. VR is the next step.
Hopefully I'll live long enough for games and applications to have direct interfacing with the brain.

exactly my point, most gamers in the world are poor. But even if you were to work it out mathematically the peak numbers at anyone one day are around 17million. if you subtract all the peak numbers from those games you listed above and work out the percentage based on the steam hardware surveys the end result is around 14million NON -dota2/pubg/csgo/TF2 gamers are playing games at 1080p or lower. that's still a HUGE number.

Then your point is moot, because none of those people are the ones posting in forums being hardware snobs. They probably don't even speak English.

I would love to know what sort of hardware peeps with 2k/4k monitors are using, granted my rig is coming up for 2 years old, it still cost me just over £2,200 and there are at least a dozen if not more games that I have that I can't run at max setttings @ 1080p, 60FPS.

and before you ask I have an i7 6700/32GB/980 Ti.

Normally I am pretty ok with lower res and stuff. I mean hell I still love my Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and so on. Lower res can look pretty good if done right.

I have several rigs at home but my mosty powerful rig with the 4k and 3860x1600 monitor has i7 6950x, 128GB ram, and duel 1080Ti. My second rig which has 2560x1080 screen has i7, 32GB ram and duel 980Ti. My third which uses 1080p has i7, 16GB ram and single 980Ti. I can play on max with all systems except for the last.

I don't really care about 4k or anything like that I just want high refresh rate.

i agree. People act like as if 4k is like real life vision or something and 1080p is like minecraft or something. they completely exaggerate the difference between the two. I have 4k at home and 1080p and the difference is discernable but not as mind blowing as you'd think.

Having a product actually beliving in the product is two different things, allso i dont remember people where saying VR is the next big thing? more to the fact that most where saying it was a fad like pogs or fidget spinner.and "only" 0.19% including companies was intressting in supporting it further... wait why does this matter all of a sudden? i newer hear people bragging about resulution or what they often play on other then what it is capable of in console arguments.

After VR I think the next step is transferring yourself into the game itself. Kinda like a Star Trek holodeck.

I made some dude's head explode when I told him I was using a 4k monitor at 1080 because 60fps was better than eyebleeding graphics at 4k and 12fps.

use 4k monitor at 1280 x 720 to get 100+ fps for the true gaming experience
