Do you think giving away a gift is rude?

I was arguing with my mom today and she believes that giving a gift away is fine. I told her a gift is meant for appreciation, the person gave you a gift to appreciate you and if you are just going to give it away then you do not have mutual appreciation.

What are your guy's thought on it?

Regardless of the intention in you being given a gift, the gift becomes yours to do with as you please once it's been accepted. That's how I see it.

I see nothing wrong with it and I wouldn't care what the person I game it to did with it. It is now theirs afterall. If they want to sell it, regift it, return it or even smash it to bits, that is their business.

We have regifted before as not all items are returnable. When you have children, you get a lot of repeat gifts and being having friend that also have children, it helps to have extra gifts on hand for last minute birthdays or if people show up unexpectedly for the holidays.

I'm sure we have recived regifts as well and we don't mind at all.

As long as you don't regift to the person who game the item to you to begin with, I don't see an issue. Afterall, it is the though that counts, not the gift it's self.

Giving and reciving gifts is a gamble. Sometime it pays off, sometime it does not.

Some gifts they just have to KNOW will be given away, thrown away or just chucked in a closet to be forgotten about. Like the "McStud" shirt my stepmom got me. I wore it exactly one time and felt like such a douchebag I wanted to kick my own ass.

Going to answer the question again. I would take no issue in a gift I give being regifted or otherwise given away - or discarded for that matter. If I gift something to someone, it may be with intent that they find some use out of it; but in the end, the gift becomes theirs to do with as they please to their loss or to their benefit.

Things are different if I am the recipient. I certainly wouldn't make it a goal to announce that I have given away a gift, partly because there's no compulsion to do so, and primarily because I understand that not everyone shares my mindset and some may even be distraught at the fact. Yes: They may even find it rude; but this is a generality and not absolute.

I think it all comes down to context, and who the gifter and the gifted is.

Well put together, and I totally agree with you on this. I find now the majority of people nowadays would catch feelings (Me).
