Bought game from charity shop, but cd-key already used. Any help?
So I got this nice metallic case Homefront game at a local charity shop, but when I tried to install it the key was already used. is there any chance to play it, or I have to buy it?
And I know that the rules say that once you register a key, it is forever and ever tied to that account...

Nope. Never by games second hand as a key can only be used one time. There is no way around this.

You can see if they will give you a refund at the shop.

Maybe contact steam support. And let them know the details. And the original CD key.

So you paid for the case. You won't play this game unless you get a working key, unfortunately.

99% of games have codes that can be activated only once. Never buy used on pc.

No, don't do this., Steam has nothing to do with you buying from a thrift store. Bad addvice and it will only tie up the Steam support system.

Its all about the age and type of DRM.

You could try contacting the game makers company and say you havent played it in ages and no longer have the same email address. Long shot but who knows if you put on the water works.

oh is that a crack in the floor i see (think about it).

Steam should somewhat take responsibillity for this to be honest. I mean if they are not going to do anything about it then they should only sell downloadable games and not real copies.

If there is proof that they have bought the game then it seems like it would be a fixable problem. It is why they call it customer support.

Then again wait a second...

Maybe company that made the game itself. They could just give you a new key most likely.

This is not Steam's responsibility, period. Maybe THQ will be nice enough to give the OP an unused, valid key but no one is under any obligation to do this, at all. Both Steam and THQ should not be responsible for any random user that decides to buy a used game with the expectation that the key has not been used. This is simply ludicrous.

I do not know I just never found it right that if you had a game in your hands and the machine to play it that you still need a key to do so. I know it is to stop people from just putting a CD into every computer they see and so on but still.

Since homefront is a steam game right? It got activated and got bound to another account which you have no access to. so there is no way to seperate the account and the key -> no chance to get it out of the other account.
buying used games which need online activation is tricky. :2015holly:

Yep it can be confusing. More or less if the company who made the game is no longer around to.
