We have Huge 4k Screens, 3D, VR video tech, why has audio tech stood still?
We have improved video/visual technology vastly in the last few years, Huge TV's, thin/curved screens, very high resolution even on phones, 4K screens, 3D technology and even now VR.

Audio has pretty much been forgotten and there hasn't been much change or improvement in consumer technology, why?

There's so much one can do to improve audio.

Because apparently

Graphics > Audio
the technology to produce convincing 3D sound is only getting better as the years goes on , both in term of virtual 3D audio and physical surround sounds.

it's just that the progress being made are subtles one compared to the other domains.

We've already done the max we can to audio technology. 7.1 was invented in the 90s...

Audio is more about physics anyways, which is why a speaker from 30 years ago can sound just as good as today. I don't know what else we can improve audio now

You clearly haven't heard audiophonic hi-fi devices.

Ever been to the cinemas and hear the surround sounds there? Yeah, well you can get than for your PC... at a price.

I was a movie theater to see "It" recently, and the theater was advertising a new "RPX" audio system or something. It was like an improved surround sound system with the usual surround setup, plus a ridiculous number of ceiling speakers.
