If you found a wallet with cash in it
What would you do?

-Leave everything where you found it.

-Take the cash and leave the wallet where you found it.

-Take both the wallet and the cash.

-Take the cash and try to return the wallet to the owner.

-Try to return both the cash and the wallet to the owner.

Be honest, now.

If it's in a public place or on your own property it's fine. Although if there is ID in the wallet you would know the owner, so in the above case i guess you would be right.

If you find money, especially a significant amount, you should check your local laws or contact an attorney or the police. If a law requires that you turn over money you have found to the police and you do not do so, you could be charged with larceny or theft. Even though you did not steal the money by taking it directly from its owner, you are holding the money and not trying to return it. Holding or possessing property that you know does not belong to you also constitutes theft or larceny under most state laws.

With regard to the money found behind the basement wall, you could try to contact the previous owners of the home and ask if they knew anything about any property being stored behind the basement walls.
Especially if you find a large amount of money, it probably is best to contact an attorney who can verify local laws regarding lost and found cash and advise you on how to proceed.
But sure, blowing the $10k you found to end up with a larceny conviction and $50k in legal debts and restitution payments is fun too!

How is "If it's in a public place or on your own property it's fine." admitting? You added your own qualifier of there being an ID, which at the end of the day will only be mostly relevant to the severity of the charges.

It's all pretty murky unless its clear who the owner is like the ID would tell you. And laws differ from place to place, which is why the thing you quoted said to contact an attorney. But at the very most if it isn't clear you're expected to make a small effort to find the owner before you can keep it. In any case taking money that has no clear owner would not be illegal because you could be then trying to return it to the owner.

Honestly I would try to return it. Because I once lost my phone and someone who found it actually returned it to me. ( long story ). So I just want to return the favour. In a way so to speak.

take the cash and try to return it although with not high effort

maybe I'll ask another person if they could return it, so they have to explain why cash is missing

-Take both the wallet and the cash. Then dump the wallet in the ditch so they can't do a finger print trace on it.
