Not looking it up, I might say it's a stringed instrument.

yeah but the sound is quite similar to a string instrument tho
Usually it is lumped in with anything that fits into the "electronic instrument" category.

Synthesizers usually fall into this category too.

By one of the most common European standarts, it is considered an 'electrophone' (the other types would be
– Aerophone
– Chordophone
– Membranophone
– Idiophone

umm so according to wikipedia, the "electronic instrument" is not a commonly recogonized family? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_(musical_instruments)
