Never actually played any Metroid game in my life, only MetroidVania games like Symphony of the Night and Shantae. I was thinking about giving a shot to Super Metroid...
Super Metroid is still the best imo, Close 2nd is Metroid AM2R (Look it up on youtube)
One of few games I actually liked on the Wii was the 3D metroid collection and they had better controls than that wierd game cube controller.
Only played Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission, all of which are some of my favourite games.

I'd LOVE to see a game like Metroid Prime, but with a much darker horror atmosphere, similar to that of Dead Space. Too bad it's never going to happen. :meatytears:

I've only ever finished one Metroid game, Metroid Prime Hunters.

I have also played Prime 1, Fed Force, and AM2R. I intend on finishing those and the other Prime games.

As for my thoughts on the games, they're all fun. Yes, even Fed Force.
I am pretty sure its been dead since Zero Suit Samus has been a thing.

I tried a demo of Prime 2 and hated the controls. I also dislike shooter controls on the Wii. It's weird how everything I didn't like about both just cancel each other out.
Never played Metroid, but I heard the original where people didn't know she was a girl was good.
Not sure which one's my favorite, though I haven't played all of them.

Metroid 1 - sort of the prototype of the series formula. My only real complaint with this one is that there's pretty much one seemingly-random block you have to bomb in order to get down into Mini-Boss Hideout 2. Though in a way one can argue that the game's manual hints at finding a way downward from Norfair, so there's only a limited number of ways to go down. The music, despite being just simple chiptunes, feels strangely and very aptly "empty" and isolating, in a very fitting way.

Metroid 2 - introduced a bunch of series staples, but has the most confusing map, with the possible exception of Other M because Other M's map is just that bad. But yeah, this is a strange, often creepy game, but very distinctive and striking. And it's amazing how much the game could do with just the very, small screen that is the Game Boy's, as well as its very limited sound system which was used to create a strange, otherwordly chiptunes including a variety of atmospheric effects that one might not imagine would be possible with such basic instruments.

Super Metroid (Metroid 3) - longtime fan-favorite, and basically the model for the Metroid formula. Deeply atmospheric in its visuals and music, and does great things with delivering narrative through gameplay and a really strong attention to detail when it comes to gameplay and aesthetic design. Not perfect, but also -- and perhaps because of that -- it's a fount of metagame discovery, with people discovering speed tricks and glitches galore. This game is also one of the longtime staples of the speedrunning community.

Metroid Fusion (Metroid 4) - my favorite as far as story is concerned, though the main criticism of this game is that it's linear and doesn't have any room for sequence-breaking -- even the times when you can do it, with difficulty, you can't do much with it (e.g. an early power bomb expansion doesn't give you power bombs, and the ability gain sequence always stays the same). But instead, I feel that this game really delivers well on the horror aspect -- which Metroid games have always had to some extent, but this game really drives it home. I like to joke that it's got to be the most brilliantly colorful horror game I've ever seen for how effective it is at being profoundly unnerving and disturbing at times. I really felt an intense survival horror atmosphere as the space station gradually descended into chaos around me. It may not be a perfect game for spectacular speedrunning tricks, but it delivers the most powerful narrative of the Metroid games I've played, in my opinion. (Yes, it's a bit wordy at times, but...I felt it makes sense in context.)

Metroid: Zero Mission - a thorough remake of the first game. Very solid quality, though in a way it seems that criticisms of it are that it is a bit too(?) solid, because now we're talking about designers who were very much conscious of the players' desires to speedrun and sequence-break things, so instead of delivering code with many loopholes (as Super Metroid did), they delivered code with few loopholes but many intentionally designed tricks. This had the ironic result of lessening the sense of discovery, despite improving the performance quality of the game, so you have some players who started arguing that it's not a real sequence break unless it's not intentionally designed in. Regardless, though, I think this is a solid game, with a solid handle on delivering narrative wordlessly in many places, though I also feel that it could have been more atmospheric.

Metroid Prime - another fan favorite. I gotta say, at first I didn't see the appeal. This game plays noticeably differently -- different controls, different ways of seeing the world, different abilities, and so on -- from the traditional 2D Metroid games. And...scanning? Why would that be fun? But yet, somehow, the more I played it, the more I felt that it meant something to me. I turned out to really like the scans, because it gave me a sense of discovery about the game world that really enriched my understanding of the setting, and made me pay attention to a lot of little things, from non-hostile creatures to entirely optional narrative logbooks to compiling a database of Tallon IV's biodiversity. And given how bad "pixel hunts" can get in the 2D games, you'd expect them to be even worse in a 3D game...yet somehow, they made it better. You can much more easily tell when there's a thing of interest, but at the same time it doesn't feel like they're beating you over the head with it. The more I played, and the more I reflected on my experiences -- and especially after I saw what Other M was like -- the more I stopped taking good design for granted and appreciated why people praise this game so much. The gameplay isn't classic Metroid gameplay, but the experience -- of discovering one's world and and gaining mastery of one's abilities -- was a genuine Metroid experience.

Metroid: Other M - okay, so we've finally come to this one. I haven't played it personally but I've watched a close friend stream all of it. Let me try to put it in a way that does it justice but does not give unnecessary praise: Someone wanted to make a movie, so they made a movie. But the problem is that it was meant to be a game, and specifically a Metroid game. It works as a movie (though the plot is a bit messy and unconvincing, and the sheer volume of maternity references feels like an insult to one's intelligence), and it kiiiinda works as a Metroid movie, in the sense that it feels about as relevant to the Metroid game series as the Metroid manga series do -- i.e. basically side-stories or the stuff of fanfics. Now, as a game, it feels lacking, constantly removing the player's immersion and connection to the player-character and putting the player in the moviegoer's seat instead. And as a Metroid game, it for some reason it lacks a number of very useful innovations and design sensibilities that the Prime series introduced to smooth the awkward transition from 2D to 3D, despite coming years after Prime.

games I haven't played or watched:
* Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - I've heard that it's not as good as Prime 1, but I've also heard that it's a pretty decent game.
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
* Metroid Prime Pinball - still more canon than Other M.
* Federation Force

fangames I've played:
* Super Metroid Eris - a difficult but manageable hack of Super Metroid. Good sense of atmosphere, though sometimes poor aesthetic design as far as gameplay elements are concerned. Interesting story.
* Another Metroid 2 Remake - despite being C&D'd by Nintendo, this game is like the definitive Metroid 2 remake (ironic because its name was coined when many such projects appeared, but the rest never came to fruition). It's basically Metroid 2 remade with Zero Mission sensibilities (and abilities) -- the original structure of the game experience is preserved but the exact gameplay is heavily revamped. It's a solid game but -- like Zero Mission -- I feel it could have been more atmospheric. For some reason, though (I blame the music in the first Chozo Ruins area, but aside from that I'm not sure), it doesn't quite feel as atmospheric and "lonely" as I'd like it to.

fangames I haven't played:
* Super Metroid Impsosible - Super Metroid, reimagined as a giant, brilliant f*** you. Watching the TAS is enough.
* Metroid Super ZeroMission - imagine somehow merging the design brilliance of Super Metroid with a variety of new gameplay features and more modern, consistent feature design from Zero Mission, plus its narrative. That's what this hack is. I haven't ever played it but watching footage of it fills me with awe.
* Super Metroid DigitalCube - k then

As for future directions for the series?

I'm content with letting them sit on Metroid for some years until inspiration strikes them. I don't like to complain about an imperfect game, because I know how difficult it is to craft a game and really design it properly and with the level of care and attention to detail that we expect of them. But I'd still look forward to a new Metroid game.
Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime series were my favorites
Never played a Metroid game except for a bit of Other M. Would like to try the prime games and a new one would probably be cool too.
Super Metroid.

I didn't like the shift to a FPS style of play latter on.
