McAfee and AMD display drivers - broken
There was a large updated on Friday to McAfee (Security Center ver. 11.6, Virus Scan ver 15.6, Firewall ver. 12.6) that required a system re-boot after which, every time I re-start my PC I loose my display drivers and end up with the basic VGA driver default.
Any one having the same problem. Checked McAfee Forums and some are having the same problem, so far there is no fix from McAffee! As far as I can see it is only a problem with the AMD CCC and drivers.
Any comments, such as the the best firewall and virus protection for free, as this is not the first time McAfee have messed up my computer with there updates

I like AVG and I've used it for years with AMD. AVG sometimes comes up with false positives with games but it's not hard just to click 'ignore'.

Thanks for that Jordanwts, are you talking about the free version? I have used Avast in the past (a long time ago when computers ran on rubber bands!) but this time I might try AVG.
As an added note, I am using Win XP with (sadly) a HD3450 graphics card.

Comodo has a free firewall and AV program.

I use Avast! for my AV and Comodo Firewall.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 for $40 untill Jan. 1st 2013. Even from Windows XP.

Yes, I am talking about the free version. :). There aren't too many different things about the free version and the paid version.
If of course you don't like it you can always uninstall and try another anti-virus.

I haven't tried Spawn of Totoro's suggestion, Comodo.

Thanks for all your help. McAfee does not let you exclude files/folders from real time scaning as far as I can see or when running a full scan! Might be wrong or dumb! Will try disable any automatict function.
My son's computer which has the same McAfee program but has a Nvidia card has not had this problem. (he's out there some where in Steam cyber space!)
This is why I love Steam, a good community with people who take the time to help other's.
Will post again about this "quest".

I have a feeling that your system reboot after installing the update for Mcafee caused corruption on your hard drive. Windows may have reverted to the generic video driver to overcome this issue. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the video drivers?

Regarding antivirus, I run Microsoft Security Essentials. I used to run Avast, but I tired of always having to renew it.

Yes it does revert to the generic VGA drivers after a reboot. I then reinstall the drivers and all's fine, till next reboot! (have done a compleat un/re-install of the drivers and CCC but the same thing happens). As I read on the McAfee site, people have un/re-istalled McAfee and their graphics drivers and still it happen's! I suspect it has todo with an update to the program for Win 8. McAfee have still not come up with any other advice yet!
Does MSE run on XP and does it have a firewall built in?
Does any one still recommened "Zone Alam", free ver', or is something like "Comodo Firewall" a better choice?
Help still wanted about all this!
Thanks evary one

Thanks for all the help. If McAfee have not sorted it out by the end of the weekend (this is the last straw in my faith with McAfee products), then I will take the advice and help that you all have given, and by hook or by crook I will spend the week geting some decent protection! (my mum use to all ways tell me to make sure I use proper protection).
Will post the saga here when done!!
Thanks again all. :-)
