It depends on what you play, but for me, the Naga was one of the best gaming-related purchases I've ever made. The downside is that once you're used to having so many extra buttons, it is hard to play again with a normal mouse.

Good mousepad has improved my gameplay.

Extra buttons on mouse are useful but I'm mostly using them in web browser to switch and close tabs and almost don't need them in-game.

Some do, but not everyone of them. Gaming mice are branded in such a way, by common definition, a mice that performs better than ordinary mice in technology, accuracy and functions. Gaming mice usually boast better communication between the mouse and the computer than 'normal' mice (i.e 1ms of response time compared to other mice). Gaming mice can also offer an array of exculsive features that 'normal' mice does not, like macros and additional keybindings. Take for example, the Razer Naga, it has 17 buttons that each has their own function alone, without any other software support. But, with the software, you can remap all the keys to whatever you wish. For example, I want to remap the number 12 key on the thumb-pad, I just go into the software and click on the respective key and the popup will allow me to bind it to another key or to select whether I want to bind a custom macro to it. These mice also have high amounts of DPI (dots per inch) which can let you move the cursor across the screen faster than conventional mice. Most of these mice often have a way to tune the DPI levels to suit your needs. For example, if you find yourself trying to snipe in a shooter game, you would find that it is easier to snipe with a lower DPI than higher ones which makes aiming a lot harder. This is because the higher sensitivity would cause you to keep shifting the aim and makes it very hard for you to position the crosshair over your target's head. Gaming mice also have better buttons than conventional mice that responds quicker and gives a much better tactile feedback to your hand so that you would know that the action has just been registered. Gaming mice also comes with better shape to fit your hands for a more comfortable gaming session. Most conventional mice are either designed to look good but have poor egronomics or superb egronomics but ****** performance. Gaming mice also tends to last a little longer than regular mice when under heavy use.

The improvements in gameplay are a little more objectional and it depends on your own skills and talents. People can buy the best gaming mouse in the world, but still get teabagged by other people using ****** mice as they are not good at playing games.

Overall though, gaming mice are more for people who plays a lot of games over long periods of time and with god enough skills to make purchasing it worthwhile.

There are a few types of gaming mice that you will need to know though. Ambidextrous mice are for people who uses the mice with both hands or they are using the mice with their left hand. Most mice on the market are designed for right handers, so left handers are sometimes at a disadvantage. These mice are usually recommended for people playing shooters or other games that are less dependant on quick reflexes or button mashing as they usually do not come with more than five buttons. MMO mice are for people who plays a lot of MMOs and needs to dish out skills in rapid succession. These mice usually comes with a **** load of buttons on one side of the mouse (usually the left side) and only benefits one hand usage. Most of these MMO mice are right handed only, though I read from multiple sources that Razer wants to make a left handed version of the Naga. One last type of major mice category is ergonomic mice. These mice fits the hand so nicely that, and I quote, "feels like s3x in my hands" (Linus from Logitech G600 unboxing video). These mice usually shares the same features as ambidextrous mice with either a left hand or right hand preference at times. These mice tends to not have many buttons as it might seem that those buttons will spoil the egronomics of it or leads to discomfort after a while due to the fast movements of the hand. Exceptions for multi-button gaming mice do occur and thus it can not be thrown out entirely.

Many mice have high DPI, but it does not mean it will perform great. High sensitivity will grant you fast turns of the camera in most games, but if you are aiming for something, you would probably miss as it is very hard to adjust your line of sight directly to the target. As mentioned above, I stated that most mice have the ability to switch DPI levels on-the-fly, but, if you bought a mouse with the ability to change the DPI level in a software suite provided by the manufacturer, but no options to switch levels on-the-fly, you have just wasted your hard earned cash.

Many professional gamers will tell you that buying a gaming mouse will improve your gameplay, most of them will either be right or have some giant peripheral manufacturer backing them up to tell other people that it is entirely beneficial to use their mice, so do watch out. Do trememdous research on a few different mice in the same category to determine which is the best mice that suits your needs and then trying them out in the shop to get a 'feel' for the mice in your hands. Remember, buying a gaming mice means buying a close representation of an extension to your arm. You do not want to buy a $100 mice that does not suit fit your hand at all.

Now that I am done, I shall go and get me some bandages for my fingers...

No diffence in my gaming, but added convinence at times.

I use a Logitech G9x and love how I could adjust the weight. I could play just as well with any optical mouse though. Hardware never makes up for skill. Unless it is a K&M vs controller.

A gaming mouse generally adds a few extra buttons to do things like DPI switching or other things, but I could never get the feel for finding the proper button at the proper time and usually screwed up while gaming.
