HDR and AMD color temp correction.
So iv been using a new OLED monitor and trying out some HDR. I noticed that AMD custom color temp correction on with HDR off gives the best colors but with HDR on having it off is more accurate. I recently had it setup in AMD in game profiles to do this accordingly with the games i used it in but after a recent windows install for whatever reason when HDR is enabled it basically glitches out and there is no difference between having custom color on or off. So HDR ends up looking slightly washed out as it doesnt switch to the proper custom color setting.

HDR isn't always a solution, if the colors become washed out and darker: You're better off disabling it.

That being said: Did you also tinker with HDR settings via Windows? Turning that off is a good "Step #1"

The thing is everything was working before. I was trying out Linux for a few and decided I didn't like it. Came back and now I'm having these issues. Seems like an AMD issue but idk. Wondering if in better off just using sdr

Just forget HDR, it's garbage. You're better off with your Display's onboard settings and presets, maybe some adjustments to said presets, whilst using high refresh rate and motion blur reduction. On most Displays if you attempt to use both HDR + High Refresh the screen will constantly auto DIM up and down; super annoying.

The implementation of HDR is a mess. The problem is that there just isn't a uniform specification and every manufacturer does something different.
Not only that but games all have their own implementations and ways of correcting for different dynamic ranges.
The very simple rule is that you just choose whatever looks better. Some games really pop with HDR, some don't. Unless it makes a really appreciable difference, I won't use it.
The one thing you should do is download the HDR calibration software from Microsoft. This gets Windows setup for HDR. Having said that, I don't use HDR in Windows, there's no point.
I use AutoActions so I can leave it off in Windows and switch it on for each game - if needed.
Each game has it's own calibration to match the dynamic range of your monitor to the game. Just set it up and see if the game is any better. If not, then switch it off.
One of the developers of some game (I forget which) told me that it's easier to just leave HDR enabled all the time, because monitors are now designed for that and give better results with a wider range of apps. I don't do that, though.

I get all that, my problem is that setting individual profiles in adrenaline with the custom color interferes now for some reason. Once I click into an HDR game and toggle custom color temp to make sure it's on it brakes and I cant tell if it's on or off. Out of game toggles fine again. Worked fine before. Was set up individually each game and just toggled on before turning game on. Something broke but IDK what. Reinstalling windows I guess. Leaving HDR on all the time is not doable in windows lol windows produces a different color signal not setup for HDR yet which is why it never looks correct in desktop. You can get close but it's never as good as sdr.

It would be better to leave OS and GPU software color settings alone and adjust things from your Monitor instead, making use of the profile presets it has onboard then editing them for different uses

Custim color temp control toggled on is by default with AMD and actually the accurate color settings. Looks washed out with it disabled. With HDR on it's the opposite. Which is why I would like to figure out why it's suddenly not working correctly. I'm using a nice OLED and it was working flawlessly for HDR gaming yesterday lol. Windows HDR calibration is kind of a must. You can't just not do that. The profile on my monitor itself is the default calibrated one and any others are not accurate.

I have no idea how this fixed it but I literally just toggled the color signal and somehow it's all fixed now.....wow.

my solution to the whole hdr problem with windows is specialK and reshade my tv which is 3300 falls outside most hdr games max peaks but with specialk it is possible

the renodx you can find a addon filter for has a per game implementation that updates the shaders for hdr use aswel

the unfortunate part about these solutions you are responsible for the hdr presentation so you gotta tinker around with the settings that said you can effectively turn every game into hdr capable

https://www.special-k.info/

https://reshade.me/

https://github.com/clshortfuse/renodx/wiki/Mods

if you have older titles you need to use translaters to get them to a newer version of directx then you can trick specialk and reshade into thinking its a native directx 9-12 for addons directx 11 is required due to it supporting compute

very usefull program for not just the translation process but also solving compatibility issues with older games

https://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/

another translation layer dxvk you can translate color data to hdr tables for use with reshade hdr filters

https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk

basically this has been the journey i went through over time with getting as much out of hdr i could

would start with specialk add your game then launch it if the specialk popup shows up then just open special k click on hdr then you should have another button to click on and you then get a new popup window for hdr just select hdr scrgb or pq and restart the game you should directly notice a change in how the game looks just go back in the special k menu back to the hdr settings and adjust it you can either base it on the nit of your screen or whatever looks good

you can also add reshade itself to specialk you can find how on the specialk site itself may need it because wel renodx needs to be done through reshade to get the shaders updated for hdr use

Yeah my above fixed comment was false. I thought it worked like I wanted. But coming to find out these few games it does it in actually look accurate the way they're presenting after I'm looking back and forth. The way I was trying to force is oversaturated. I think these games have built in HDR color profiles or something. Because other older games take the toggle just fine.

Also, did you change the Color Depth to 10bit in the AMD GPU software?

Sure did

Ok yes cause on NVIDIA I know often when you redo GPU Drivers or do a clean install of them (whatever you do that would make the GPU Control Panel be back to defaults basically) I always have to go into NVIDIA CP and change RGB = FULL and change from 8bit to 10bit.

So I knew on AMD you most likely needed to change to 10bit, as long as your Display supported it. Left on 8bit, HDR or not, colors look washed out in most stuff.

I can go all the way to 12 bit, I think its just how its supposed to work, some games it toggles, some new games it seems just have build in color profiles that override.

Old post, but is there any chance the monitor is an AOC ag276qzd2?
