> Try to keep your ears clean, yes the outside areas of your ears, they can often get dirty throughout the day even when not touching them, putting anything against them or laying down. You might even need to take a break from using headphones if using them for lengthy periods in order to do this. Something as simple as a personal wipe, or even alcohol cleaning wipe will do great for that. Then fan some air on them to dry them.
> As you put down your headphones for the day, or giving them a lengthy break, take the time to wipe them down as well. The head-bar, and the ear-cups. As they might get greasy or moist from your oils and sweat over time. Vinyl will not dry out if it gets greasy or oily, this also causes them to crack over time, however avoid using any alcohol products in vinyl as that can actually further damage them. Warm+Soapy water works best on vinyl. Cloth on the other hand, while it can be better, there is a danger that this can easily trap all sorts of germs.
The headphones are 8 years old at this point. I'm not sure if you are familiar with Cloud X's, but around the edge is a very thin pliable lip that slips into a groove it's the only thing that holds the foam on. Over time this stuff just stretches out and the ear pieces get loose and they just fall off from time to time when you take them off or set them down. It's like those metal drinking cups, after a while you just need a new O-ring, ya know?
I just never heard of cool gel, or used the fabric ones for this style, the vinyl was nice but i thought maybe there might be something better.
