Computer shut down in the middle of bios update. Need help please.
I was updating the bios for my ASROCK Z87 PRO 4 motherboard, and I accidently shut off my computer while it was in the middle of updating... Now my computer will not boot up to the desktop anymore.

Please, how do I fix this? Please tell me my MOBO is not bricked now? O_o

ASRock Crashless BIOS
ASRock Crashless BIOS allows users to update their BIOS without fear of failing. If
power loss occurs during the BIOS updating process, ASRock Crashless BIOS will
automatically inish the BIOS update procedure ater regaining power. Please note
that BIOS iles need to be placed in the root directory of your USB disk. Only USB 2.0
ports support this feature.

I would read the manual very closely, because I'm not sure what may have happened by doing a BIOS reset.

Check your motherboard manual, you should be able to reflash your BIOS. Most motherboards now have 2 BIOS chips, 1 is a backup in-case stuff like this happens, as I said check your manual. On my motherboard I have to make contact with these two metal pieces and it will reset the BIOS.

Sucks this happened, but how does one "accidently" bump the switch?

I keep my tower next to my desk (roughly 2 feet from me) and my power cords/power strip are all tucked behind the desk where you can't reach them without climbing on your hands and knees.....I can't "accidently" bump the power off on my computer unless I tried really, really hard.

Do you keep the tower right next to you on top of the desk? If so, what where you doing touching the computer while it was updating the BIOS? Curious minds want to know!

I was updating my bios for the i7-4790k, you need a Z97 mobo or update the bios of your Z87 to use an i7-4790k... So yeah, the PC was not on my desk. I leant over my PC stupidly to reach something... And well, the rest is history.

I know it was very stupid, but it is done now, there is nothing I can do about it now. :-(

I'll check, thanks for the info.

worst case, you can rma the mobo

most manufacturers will inspect and see you bricked it and won't allow any RMA/credit. you'll have to buy a new board... and you'll have a rep for fraud.

If its under warranty they'll usually just reflash the BIOS for you (if your honest). My advice, if its under warranty be honest, if not then your forking out for a new board I'm afraid (If RotNs suggestion doesn't fix it for you)

As my earlier post. Why not try buying a new bios chip off of ebay for $13.

most of the time, you send in the board (after filling out the rma form)
they verify the mfg date and determine its not abused, then they will fix it for free, and send it back

Eh, stuff happens. Many years ago (back in the telephone modem days) I was on the phone with Dell tech support and accidentally jiggled the phone cord plugged into the back of my modem card and disconnected myself.

I've poked around the manual a bit and I'm not encouraged. The best i can find is if you power-cycle the board several times (giving it several seconds each time before powering back off), it *may* correct itself and you can do the bios update again...

I'm surprised it doesn't have a secondary factory BIOS for recovery purposes.

If that doesn't work, you'd need to send it back for repair.

that board does not have dual bios
if it crashed, rebooted, ect.. during the bios flash process its a currupt bios and needs to be rma'd

Since your getting a different board you may have an issue with Windows reactivation, though you should be able to with no issues.

Another thing to consider is, with the change to a different motherboard you may run into blue screens when you attempt to load windows, if that happens you'll have to format and do a clean OS install.

I know how to do that, no problem. Well same as the Bios update, but I had to be an idiot and lean over the computer to grab something. :-(
