What are your thoughts on the 24TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive? Model No: ST24000DM001
https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/products/hard-drives/barracuda-hard-drive/

Saw it on sale at a cheap $/TB on Newegg a while back, but now it is sold out.

I would rather have 4 TB SSD then 24 TB HDD.
How much per tb

Looks like reviews for otget models show high failure rate. I prefer wd

if you need this much storage you need to back it up.....this is a place RAID 10 should be used.....

It was something like 379 cad. Enterprise grade drives in the same capacity are at least 50% more expensive.

Spec sheet says it is only rated for 2400 days a year. That may be the main drawback.
very important check if you can find if its a shingled magnetic recording(SMR) or conventional magnetic recording (CMR) drive

the cmr drives is what you want the smr drives makes you wanna pluck your hairs out if you use it for anything other then long term storage they are slugish in transfer speeds and i mean enjoy experiencing less then 1 mb transfer speed from my experience with them

why do smr drives exist they are cheaper to produce at higher capacity then cmr drives

i am not sure if i need it. my entire steam library takes about 5 terrabytes, while my gog library might be about the same size, i will likely buy something slightly smaller. seagate harddrives is usually solid and i have never had one fail on me. though the external ones some times disconnects if i reboot too often. i have 6 external harddrives and all still works. my internal harddrives too.

24TB is tempting ngl… but unless you're backing up entire galaxies or hoarding terabytes of anime in 4K, it's kinda overkill without redundancy

also yeah. check if it's SMR or CMR. SMR drives are fine if you're just dumping stuff and rarely touching it, but trying to actually use one regularly? might as well store your files on a USB 2.0 potato

for that price though, if it's CMR and you're cool with spinning rust, it's kinda a steal. just pair it with a fast SSD and pretend your media hoard is NASA-tier data science
It seems a huge amount of data to lose on a drive failure.

ALL DRIVES EVENTUALLY FAIL

If you need that much hard storage, look into a nas with redundancy.
Depends on price but I wouldn't buy a refurb. I'd probably get a bunch of other drives instead.
maybe it's enough to install gta6, giving each villager a personal ia.
I have a couple of their 20's. Very good. They run cooler and quieter than my old 4's and 10's.

But beware, Newegg is selling OEM bare drives. Seagate may not honor the warranty. Best Buy usually has the same price for a real retail version.

They are cost effective and generally "ok", but also too noisy for my setup.

If you've got a NAS in a living room area and noise levels are a factor go for the WD RED PLUS series.

I am actually running 3x Western Digital 20 TB Golds in raid 5. They can get noisy. My pc is in the living room, so it doesn't bother me when I sleep.

No sh*t, those are one of the most noisest WD drives together with the Ultrastars.

That seagate *should be more quiet then the golds, but nowhere close to Red Plus noise levels.
Who tf needs 24 TB on a single drive....You can probably get the same 24 TB in a bank of 4 drive for a LOT less
