Xbox handheld coming this year; Xbox prebuilt PC in 2027

I assume this means we’ll finally see Microsoft’s answer to SteamOS.

I’m particularly interested in the potential of a ‘relatively’ cheap prebuilt gaming PC (assuming Microsoft price aggressively like they do with consoles) that can offer a console-like user experience for the living room environment.

I hope they don't have an answer for SteamOS, honestly.
Like all things Microsoft does, it’ll probably be a bloated mess.

its not going to run windows thats for sure

probably a streaming only handheld, using xbox cloud gaming.
so its xbox os bloat will not effect its gaming at all.

only full of ads and most likely require gamepass ultimate sub to use it.

I highly doubt it. Ms has been forcing devs to make games both for series x and s. A handheld with roughly the same performance and better upscaling is possible

Not true. You are missing the big picture here. I highly doubt ms intentionally gimped the series s and conditioned devs for an entire gen to release games for two different setups only to release a cloud only handheld that is probably the same price as a cheap iPad but runs considerably worse and with less features. It just makes no sense and given the fact that the frequency of these xbox handheld rumors are picking up and the efficiency of handheld PCs and mobile hardware are improving with each gen I can easily see ms releasing something as revolutionary as the ps vita but unlike Sony they have dev support for their entire first and third party lineup

You don't have to believe anything I say. In roughly two years from now we will see if this hypothesis is correct
If they do physical sd card games its def interesting. If its just a streaming thing forget it

It will most likely support SD card express which is going to be far better than regular SD card performance and I doubt it's going to be a streaming only device considering you can run game pass on almost anything. There is no reason for a customer to opt for this when he could run it on his cheap laptop or handheld or TV or phone or tablet. There is already precedent of such duds:
Sony streaming handheld
Logitech streaming only phone

It would be absolutely asinine to release a streaming only device

Valve will, in ValveTime.

It's all guessing and speculating, but I tend to agree that it more likely be some kind of streaming device with limited support to lightweight legacy games runinng on device.
Looking at where Microsoft is heading to, they will more likely be keen to bind you to some kind "subscribtion based cloud streaming solution", than going into investing big money into new power efficient hardware design + new Windows based power efficient OS. Be serious. Look where they put their money into. If you also assume they understand the "AI buble will not last forever", they would have a nice way to utilise all the cloud based GPUs they ordered. Oh well, it seems like Nvidia is also much more keen to put their money in that segment, instead of developing consumer GPU for small number of rich boys.

I also think that Microsoft will forget about Windows as soon as they have other alternative. Gaming seems to be a good domain for a trial. It's much cheaper for them to offer you simple, linux-based device that will allow you to play games deployed on their cloud.

Time will show where it will go. I'm not planning to loook in this topic afer 2 years anyway :-)

Competition is good, surely?

Not when it comes to Microsoft. Their understanding of competition is breaking the legs of the other, kicking them in the balls and pissing on their grave.

Last time something like this happened was when some brand I forgot came up with the idea of netbooks in 2000's. The netbooks were going to run on Linux as Windows were too bloated even for that day's standards. Microsoft spit their drink when they heard this and quickly made a lightweight version of WinXP called Windows CE. Offered a ♥♥♥♥ ton of money to the brand and put Windows on the netbooks.

I don't want this to happen again.
