Good air cooler for LGA 775 ?
Hello fellow Steam fans,

I have an older board, a DP45SG Intel Extreme that is socket LGA 775 and I have a QX9650 in it now. I am puting a simple gaming PC together just to utilize the older hardware I have here as a hobby and I need a good air cooler for the setup.

I had a Hyper 212 on it once before, but that cooler has quite a high profile, and I will be using a regualar mid-tower case most likely so you see I need a lower profile for the cooler.

The north bridge heatsink is quite large, as it stands about one and one-half inches from the board and is about 3 inches wide so the cooler needs to be able to fit the area well as I am sure you understand.

I have gently overclocked the CPU before, but only with increasing the multiplier from 9 to 10 as to get 3.3 Ghz from 3.0 Ghz and the Hyper 212 was awesome for this CPU and barely ever even went high enough on the fan to hear. I plan to keep the 3.3 Ghz overclock as described here.

Thanks for reading and please leave any comments if you have time.

Any tower-standing cooler like a CM Hyper series (TX3, 212 EVO, T4) would clear surrounding Motherboard VRM / Bridge Heatsinks.

As long as your chassis is wide enough to have a 120mm rear fan placement; then a tower-cooler like a Hyper212 shouldn't be of any issue. The only issues being that if your case originally has a side-air-duct-scoop (some OEM cases have this); you were wanting to place a side panel fan to blow over the CPU area; or have tall heat-speader RAM. Those 3 factors would get in your way. But those shouldn't be an issue to remove, and wouldn't be needed with such a cooler. Best bet is using low-profile RAM; for example; ones like (or similar) to G-Skill ARES, Corsair Vengeance LP

If a Hyper212 is really "too big" then use a HyperTX3 which is similar, but smaller due to 92mm fan size. But again it also has less heat-pipes and might not yeild such a great OC. Still beats a majority of the down-ward-facing OEM style coolers. Unless you going with a really small form-factor chassis where those types might be needed.

Hello Bad-Motha...thanks again so much for leaving a great comment in my thread here.

My RAM should not be an issue since there are no heat spreaders and it is simply Kingston Value RAM which the board was quite finicky to get memory that would allow POST.

I will check out the HyperTX3 also as you suggested here and compare that to the dimensions of the Hyper212 and perhaps make a decision based on those two.

I do not plan to go heavy on any overclocking, just a gentle increase in the multiplier and that has not given me any problems for a few years on this board/CPU before so that should not be a problem either.

I am almost sure my case does indeed have a 120mm rear case fan, so I will do more research here and go with one or the other most likely.

Thanks again so much for helping always in the forums and for your help here, once again.

You already have a Hyper212 in a system; correct?
Maybe take the time to just try that on your LGA-775 setup and see how it fits and performs.

While it might be a pain to swap from one motherboard to another; it might save u from a bad purchase and/or disappointment overall.

Well, I actually transferred the 212 to my new build with the 4790k, and it is still a really awesome performing cooler for that CPU. I did originally toss around the thought of just buying another one and using both for each build, as they are quite affordable and great coolers for a wide range of sockets, as I am sure you know.

I wish I would have done that now, just bought another one that is, since I would now know for sure or not if it would fit...LOL

That is mainly why I was asking here, because I was sure you guys have had experience with older sockets.

A little old school but I like the ASUS silent square (on a Phenom in a small ish case) and ASUS Silent Knight (I have one on a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz).

@initiaLiSeD
Nothing against old school here, if it is a recommendation from the good users in this forum. Thanks for your comment here and I have made a note of those coolers also. I do recall reading some before on the Silent Knight, and I also have a Q6600 in another hobby build of mine ! LOL

Thanks again, as it is much appreciated.

The Q6600 is in my son's PC, he uses it for Minecrraft and TF2, I only left a small OC on when he inherited the hardware because why not!

I have a GTX 560 Ti and a GTX 260 also for the GPU, so I am good to go on pretty much everything but the cooler. You guys are really awesome and that goes for the rest of the community here !

Hey thanks for that video and your reply here. I know that Noctua makes a great cooler, but I am not sure that one will work as the heatsink for my north bridge my interfere with it, but I surely thank you anyway and I have added it to my list of ones to check out !!!
OLDMAN🎅 Aug 11, 2015 @ 7:27pm
Noctua have a 5-star rating and Noctua makes more then one air cooler, you need to install the air cooler first be for you install the motherboard in case

Thanks again for the comment here and for the help. I do in fact have the board out of the case now and so your suggestion is appreciated as well as the link here. Again, I am glad to have all the options I can get.
