Upgrading My Gateway FX
Good day to you all, I come seeking some help upgrading my PC. Before I continue let me disclose my PC’s specs. I have a modified Gateway FX that has 12 gigs of ram, a 1st gen Intel Core i7 860 processor (2.80GHz), an EVGA GEFORCE GTX 780 (3GB of GDDR5), 750W Rosewill Hive power source, Netgear Wireless N – 300 USB Adapter, and I’m not sure about the internal hard drive or motherboard. The OS is Windows 7.

What I am looking at upgrading is the case, processor, motherboard, and maybe adding a small solid state hard drive to put my operating system on. If possible I’m trying not to go over $600 dollars, but realize this may not be possible. When it comes to the new case I’m looking for a big one with lots of fans and good airflow. I would like to get another i7 processor that is more current, I believe 4th gen is the most recent. I’m not sure what I’m looking for in the motherboard, but was told it needed to be upgraded if I went to a 4th gen i7. I would also like the motherboard to have 2 graphics card slots, I plan on putting in another GTX 780 next time they go on sale, and 3.0 USB. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion on what I should get, and if anyone could point me in the right direction for installing these parts.

For sure get at least a new case and a SSD. I'm not sure about the cpu because that is still a good cpu. (I'm still running that cpu for 4 years straight and it still performs very well on gaming) I remember back then those Gateway FX models runs pretty hot.

That isn't an upgrade, that is a brand new computer transformation.

I7 4790K, z97 gigabyte gaming 5, corsair 400D atx case. I suggest waiting out on the SSD, until the brand new M.2 64GB models get cheap. It will be way faster than SATA SSD, plus the motherboard fully supports M.2 SSDs.

Yeah, you're pretty much doing a brand new computer build if your changing the cpu and motherboard.
if its an oem build, you may need a new case and os and drives too

only thing you can reuse is the gpu/psu
the 1g i7 is ahead of any amd fx cpu, only step forward would be a haswell i5/i7

4690k would be a huge step forward, and easily doable build without a psu/gpu for $600usd

or 4790k with no ssd

I haven't ever done any major work on my PC, just switching out graphics cards, power sources, and RAM. In light of this could you explain why I would need a new OS and drivers? In addition I did mention getting a new case.

Thank you very much! I'll start looking into these parts and how to install them very soon. If you have any advice or good sources for teaching a newbie how to do major overhaul such as this I would appreciate it.
oem os, you will need to call ms to get it transfered to a new mobo

odd and sd bays are oftne custom fit to the case

and reusing the case for a new mobo is difficult with oems, you will need to remap the front panel connector to work with the new mobo
(for hdd/power leds, and power/reset buttons)

The meanings of some of the abbreviations you are using elude me due to the fact I'm new to major computer overhauls. Could you explain some of them such as "odd", "mobo", and "oem"?
oem = orig equipment mfg, aka dell/hp/compaq/gateway ect..
odd = optical disk drive, aka cd/dvd/bd
os = operating system, aka windows
led = lights
mobo = motherboard

Asus also has excellent motherboards aswell.

I'm starting to have a change of heart towards asus, since I just got the GA-J1900-d3v motherboard and it is the worse motherboard I've ever ♥♥♥♥♥♥ from gigabyte!
gigabyte and asus oem custom boards have alot to be desired
