What do you do with your old PC parts?
Thursday I'm upgrading my rig. I'm not sure what to do with the old parts.

What do you folks personally do with them? Do you hold onto them? Trash them? Sell them?

I sell them either the rebuyers - resellers or private persons interesting in the parts.
put them in a bench pc for testing

I don't know why you'd trash 'em. Even the really old stuff is somewhat valuable to people who want to build periodically correct machines, and if you can't find a buyer then you can keep 'em as spare parts for troubleshooting or backup.

Hold onto them. Old parts can be useful in the future when you have hardware failure and you can put in old parts while you wait for RMA or a replacement, or trouble shoot a problem, or if a friend or family member needs a part.

I'm still currently holding onto some of my prior stuff, but that's more due to procrastination than anything else. I'm not in a dire straights for the small amount of money they'd gain me to sell (or the small space they'd free up) so they've been sitting for now, but I keep meaning to getting around to do something about some of it (some of it I am intending on holding onto for spare parts or side hardware though).

i just throw it all in the basement in cardboard boxes, i have old cpu's a half a dozen computer and psu's someday i might just put them out for spring cleaning, many parts can be recycled on newer computers and or other electronics, the parts in a Psu can be turned into things like

A hot wire cutter
a small welder
or several other devices that will burn your house down if your not careful.

lots of the plugs can be reused, cables fans, even the old computer cases can be chopped up and riveted into new designs and shapes to create more futuristic pc cases.

over all i try to never throw anything related to pc's away, you never know when you will need something

Well my personal rig, I upgrade stuff my old parts go to my brother/uncle or my aunt and I sell their old stuff to re coop some of the money.

Like recently, I upgraded to a 5950x I found cheap, my uncle got my 5900x, I sold my uncles 5800x on marketplace, I could have gave it to my aunt the 5800x as shes on a 2700x, but that 2700x is way more than what she does with the system, so I sold it.

Now back then I bought a 6800xt for too much, I found a 3090ti at a good price, and my brother was on a Vega64, At the time the 6800xt's were going for $1,000 new, I "sold" it to my brother for 500 on payments which he only gave me $20 and thats all I got after about a year of him owning the card, He had a issue with his PC and I took it home to fix it, I reposed the card and gave him a GTX1050ti, I sold the card for $300 on marketplace. I bet he wont pull that crap on me again lol.

If they are still working then I put them in the box and stash somewhere, you never know when you might need something.

for decades I either gave my old pc away for nothing to somebody that deserved it (like somebody on welfare that did not even have a computer, or such)

I not like giving my adres and dealing with rando's online and spending all that time for 10 more or less..

if a system broke (which did happen) well those systems are still laying in my basement broken as they were back in 2006 and 2008;)

I must say though that I do miss SOME of my old hardware now especially the pc as I had in 2000.. with my 21 inch crt.. and while I gave it away for free to a charity ran by somebody now dead.. so no way to trace where it went and if they still have it..

usually if upgrading, depending on part, if the part is broken straight to bin. any other part i usually give it to someone. and odd occasion when i got a new system, some shops would give me small discount so they take my old pc (depending on how old the pc is of course). over the years gave old drives, graphics card (if it still works) and depending on ram type, gave to either my friends, cousin or currently a work colleague.
