Much easier to just Google search: SteamOS 3 for desktop

Plenty of info all right there.

Valve is working on a desktop version of SteamOS but it won't be anytime soon

Not that it really makes a difference, it's still based on Arch so basically any Arch distro can give the same and better results with SteamOS in its current state. Garuda Linux is the easiest (but with higher system resource cost due to performance optimizations taking up more RAM, and more bloat in the OS) because it's prepackaged with everything you'd need for gaming.

They're working on it in Valve time.

I don't get why people want it at all.
There is no need for it.
Just go do some research on Linux distros that are good for gaming.
Pay even closer attention to them if you are using NVIDIA GPU.
Then just go install a Linux distro and setup Steam + Proton.

SteamOS for desktop wouldn't be all that different to you then and if anything it probably won't perform any better than Arch, better off just staying on it

yes thanks I know this, if I put SteamOS on a system it would be for another, I was hoping it would be more user-friendly for those individuals. I was asking if there was any information on the release of it I'm not sure why people being so off-putting, I'm running Arch I know how to use the terminal, package managers and Aur.
check back in 2030 , by then steam os 3 should have made some developments.

Pop!_OS would make more sense for linux gaming beginners first before anything based on Arch.

pop_os is very user-friendly I install it on a eMachines EL158g-51W this has NVIDIA nForce 430 gpu doesnt work most operating systems I had to use a windows generic driver for windows 10 but work fine on pop

Sorry to bother an old thread but I'll give you my use case, I recently got a real nice 4k TV but all I have to game on it is a Switch and a steam deck, which can both barely (if at all) run 1080p at a decent frame rate.

Using my PC with the TV isn't an option as it's in a different room, and in-home streaming doesn't seem to work with HDR, even if it did the visual artifacts and latency would make it less than ideal.

I built a new PC recently, and the old parts I have lying around would run the TV just fine. I don't want to use Windows bc I want a console-like experience, and I don't want to use other Linux distros for the same reason. I know I could probably tinker around with one until it basically does what I want, but I do enough tinkering on my desktop, for this custom console I just want to slap an OS on it and play games. SteamOS is the PERFECT solution for me.

For now I'm just gonna try out HoloISO.

You can set up steam to launch into big picture mode on startup of windows if all you are looking for is a console like experience.

^ what duckford1 said. Linux and HDR is still hit or miss and while Valve is doing a lot of legwork to get it working there is still a ways to go to iron out the links.

Setting Windows 11 up with auto-hdr and setting Steam to launch in Big Picture mode at launch and to launch on boot is pretty easy and will give you a console like experience most of the time.

Otherwise if you really want a Linux distro before Valve launches SteamOS for general availability then check out ChimeraOS. It is designed to be a console like experience and has installers for Steam as well as heroic and lutris for most of the major launcher/stores.
