Does graphics cards blow up because of low power supply?

I've heard many people having their graphics card died of lighning or small explosion.

i once ran a 4870 1gb on a like 300w psu. which killed the psu finally and the system shut down once in a while.
i doubt the graphics card would take damage from a low psu.
just my 2 cents on the case.

Low-end PSU and power surges due to lightning strikes are COMMPLETLY different things.

A low-end PSU won't *blow-up* your graphic card … it just might not be enough to power it.

No, they do not blow up due to low power supply. They shut down as it can not draw the power it needs.

Only time a GPU would "explode" is if it over heated due to lack of cooling either in th case or the fan stopped working.

Crappy quality psu's have caught fire or *popped* frying all components in the pc on people but as was already said, your gpu will not explode.

Capacitors can pop, usually if they are defective or old.

A weak PSU wont make a GPU explode, but a poor quality PSU can explode itself.

Most new gpu have excellent power management components since they're basically their own high power motherboards. The chances of the psu (outside of a lightning strike) killing it is very low. Your gpu will die from heat due to a faulty heatsink/fan before that.

depends on the psu
iv seen poor psus kill mobo, cpu, drives, gpus and other devices plugged into them

a quality psu will shut down before harming any other components
poor ones can kick out ac thru the dc rails when loaded and damage components

as for the gpu explode, no, but it may not work anymore
