American Megatrends
About 30 minutes ago i was watching videos on my computer. I all of a sudden realised that i hadn't updated my drivers in a while, but i couldn't seem to get the Nvidia control panel to open. So i went onto the website and downloaded it manually. Then after about 2 minutes of installing my computer monitors just turned off. Naturally i just assumed this was the drivers doing there buisness becuase my sound was still working. Then after about 30 minutes i turned off my computer. When i turned it back on i got a screen saying American Megatrends, then something about CPU over tempature error. What is this? I am not a computer wise guy. What can i do to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Cleaning your fans, might work.
With compressed air?

Open her up, check the fan is working (both CPU and Video card). Check the heat sink is properly against the CPU. If all checks out but you still get the issue, then you can always try replacing the thermal paste.

Or, in your case, after checking the fans are working, take it to a PC repair shop.

You say you don't know alot about comptuers, so unless you are asking so you don't blow anything up, just do it.
Can't a guy be curious?

Did you use the link i posted?
You may either need to get new fans.
Yes thank you. I will buy some compressed air on monday and give everything a clean. I'll give the company i bought it off a quick call aswell.

vacuum cleaners create a lot of static
aircompressor or cans of compressed air are best

compressed air is just as dangerous, possibly more... I use a vacuum and have for years. any way you choose, you must be careful. It the air rushing past electronics that causes static electricity and pops parts.

I use both a vacuum and air compressor. Just make sure everything is grounded.

Cleaning your system about once every couple months is a good idea, but if it wasn't overheated before the driver update then I suspect it had something went wrong with the update itself, did you download the driver from the official nvidia/GeForce.com site?

American Megatrends is the BIOS brand of your particular motherboard. Your PC isn't booting past the BIOS probably because it's detecting that the CPU heatsink isn't doing it's job or has come loose somehow. It could be that it may not be conducting the heat off the CPU fast enough due to bad contact, in which case you need to take it off, apply some thermal paste and then re-seat it. If your not a tech savvy guy then maybe the repair shop is the way to go. I suspect the fact that you were installing video drivers when it went kaput is just purely coincidental.

A little more to it than this; but none the less Silicon is right. Any way u choose, u must be careful.

With compressed air, you should use short controlled bursts. If the can gets too cold, it will not have effective pressure. And be careful not to tilt your can of air, causing the liquid to shoot out.

With a vacuum, it is often the nossle/hose ending that is the issue, as the air being sucked inward will cause the ending to be charged with static.

Best bet is use a combination of these:
> Compressed air
> Vacuum
> Clean Paint Brush that doesn't have metal in it. Most have metal casing around the bristles though, and for that I would suggest simply covering it with duct tape. To avoid that metal touching anything sensitive. Keep it clean and store it away for just this type of purpose. Do not use house-hold cleaning products, such as "Dusters" and things like "Swiffer". They can be static-charged already and thus is what helps certain dust cling to them. They are not safe around most electronics. While they are usually just fine for the outside and around things like TVs, Monitors, Speakers. They should never be used on the inside of a PC/Laptop as such internals are much more sensitive then simply using around the outside of such devices, like the outer part of your PC case for example, which should be fine.

You can use the paint brush to "dust" with, as the sucking of air through a vacuum by itself won't be very effective. Also because you won't even be able to get close enough to components to clear away the dust effectively with only a vacuum. In alot of areas of the case, the blowing of air can be more effective, thus is why compressed air comes in handy too.

Best bet is to do this outdoors or in a garage area if u can help it, otherwise just a few bursts of compressed air could turn into a mess, or blowing dust everywhere.
