Beyond 1 controller at any given time is pointless to connect though, and can cause issues.
If the game you wish to launch does not support multi-players / controllers for local COOP, disconnect all but one you wish to use.
You can however leave the 360 wireless adapter connected at all times; that will not interfere with a wired controller.
Problem really is that with Controllers; no more then 4 will really work together; that is why Sony and Xbox have those 4x LEDs for Controllers #1 - 4
You might get more then 4 to initially appear to work; but I bet you the Controllers will at some point randomly change # and screw up who's who.
Now I know we're talking PC; but again, what Games even would offer that?
More then 4 Players on-Screen in 1080p to me would make no sense.
Dwarven brawl bros
Brawlhalla
Clusterpuck 99
Obliteracers
To mention a few...
The nextgen consoles support up to 8 per console. Problem is that not that many games in the console world support than many players.
I'm gonna try having two wireless adapters for xbox 360 and connect for to each adapter.
Anyways to answer your question it doesn't matter how many as long the game was made to detect and use them in their own profiles within the game.
Don't use more than 4 for wireless Xbox 360 controllers, because the thing won't pick up the 5th or so on, you can do half and half, or all wired into their own USB port, they'll all count as an individual controller in each USB port, and will be seen by Windows.
-edit-
But don't use the Microsoft apps/games, there a good chance it will get confuse, because it was not made to see more than 4 controllers.
-edit-
You can do all 8 controllers wireless if you wanted, but you need two receiver, as the limit is set to 4 per receiver.

There is an API via UWP which MS provide to devs which supports these features but it hasn't been made public yet.
So if your games are using the controllers via xinput, 4 is your limit. You may be able to get more to work by using them via HID but the issue you come across then is the triggers are tied to the same axis which means if you press both triggers at the same time is it simply seen as neither being pressed at all.
