Crucial do a good explanation

If it helps… Quad channel is still 64bit. Also, the relationship between cpu and ram is independent to the relationship between gpu and vram.
Number of ranks is written on the stick itself.
For the most part, forget about ranks. Just make sure you’re running in dual channel. That’s the bit that matters… not unless you’re running a data centre!?
Edit: the 8 ranks that your motherboard supports means 8 ranks total. So 1 8-rank stick, 2 4-rank sticks, 4 2-rank sticks or 8 1-rank sticks. Regardless of which combination you use it’ll all end up 64bit (or 72 for ecc). The number of channels is not related.
So, if you use a motherboard with four dimms you get four single rank dimms.
If you use a motherboard with two dimms you get two dual rank dimms.
This way you populate all dimm slots, run in dual channel and optimize ranks.
I imagine with how different DDR5 is there's a larger difference but I only have SR and there's no high performance DR DDR5 currently.
this explains rank for you
the video explains it perfectly, if you wont take the time to watch it why should anyone type it out, he shows graphs and bench marks ..
Both of the samples of memory they compare is single rank (one is 1Rx8 and the other is 1Rx16, whereas dual rank will be labeled as 2Rx8 or 2Rx16).
