Single or dual-rank ram
Use single or dual-rank ram?

Dual-rank is faster, but the difference is not that big, around 2-3%
If you can find dual rank for a decent price, then fine, otherwise don't panic.
If you can then always pairs, not single stick.
Dual channel is always better then single channel. Just like if someone asks you do you want 100 dollars or 200 dollars. Everyone one will take the 200 dollars it's more.

There is a difference between channel and rank, you know?

I don’t really understand what your asking.

If it helps… Quad channel is still 64bit. Also, the relationship between cpu and ram is independent to the relationship between gpu and vram.
Rank has nothing to do with channel.
I don’t understand…Channels or dimms?

Number of ranks is written on the stick itself.

For the most part, forget about ranks. Just make sure you’re running in dual channel. That’s the bit that matters… not unless you’re running a data centre!?

Edit: the 8 ranks that your motherboard supports means 8 ranks total. So 1 8-rank stick, 2 4-rank sticks, 4 2-rank sticks or 8 1-rank sticks. Regardless of which combination you use it’ll all end up 64bit (or 72 for ecc). The number of channels is not related.

Just set your RAM up for dual ranks in each memory channel.

So, if you use a motherboard with four dimms you get four single rank dimms.

If you use a motherboard with two dimms you get two dual rank dimms.

This way you populate all dimm slots, run in dual channel and optimize ranks.

Yea I know. When I wrote that I had been up over 24 hours. And wasn't thinking straight.
In the simplest terms with DDR4 there's about 400MHz advantage on a 100% repeatable/identical workload, meaning DR Ballistix 3600 would perform same as SR Ballistix 3600 overclocked to 4000.

I imagine with how different DDR5 is there's a larger difference but I only have SR and there's no high performance DR DDR5 currently.

Please no slight of hand youtube video.... Just explain if rank is a performance movement of data or a piece of hardware or just something

the video explains it perfectly, if you wont take the time to watch it why should anyone type it out, he shows graphs and bench marks ..

this explains rank for you
That video is covering density, not rank.

Both of the samples of memory they compare is single rank (one is 1Rx8 and the other is 1Rx16, whereas dual rank will be labeled as 2Rx8 or 2Rx16).
