Does Windows 10 License expire?
I turned on my PC and got the message: "Your Windows license will expire soon. Please activate it on Settings". What does this mean? Will I have to buy a new one?

This message appears when your copy of Windows is not registered. You are granted a temporary licence that will expire.

It can happen, though, when the copy is licensed but isn't legal. In other words, stolen or has been upgraded to a version the PC was not licensed for.

The recommendation is to extract the license key (there are apps in the Windows Store that can do this) and enter the key again.

I did not such thing. I merely pointed out some reasons this kind of issue COULD occur. That is all. Just call Microsoft and get it fixed, it's that simple really.

Or use Win10/11 without any key at all. It's not like any user is required to have or pay for a key to use those OS' fully in the first place.

Extract the key? Bro in like 5 secs you can look at the key, you don't need no crap from the Microsoft Store for that. WTF good is the key? It's already on the system and activated. The only reason the person needs the key is to share it with Microsoft in a case like this. Unless you needed the key from say your Win10 so you can do a clean install of Win11 for free.

But overall Microsoft will ask...

> What is your product ID
This tells them without knowing your product key, what kind of license you have to begin with. This is found easily by going to Settings > System > About -or- This PC > Properties

> Where / Whom you purchased either the OS, or the PC w/ OS preinstalled

I've even had this occur with a few HP and DELL PCs so it's not like it's always a fraud type of scenario, or fake activation program that is the cause of this type of problem. With those HP and DELL machines, Microsoft had no problems clearing up the issues after I verified everything about the PC, when I bought it, etc. To prove that the PCs were not stolen, etc.

Because taking a look at the key doesn't always work, whereas the applications to extract the key do.

Why enter it again? Because it has been known to fix the problem.

Generally the notice will appear if either (a) you have an evaluation license, like the free Windows Enterprise evaluation download, or (b) if you are using a KMS key and you have been off the corporate network long enough for the activation to expire.

Retail and OEM licenses of Windows are perpetual.

Since not activating no longer bricks the PC there is no longer a grace period before the nagging begins.

No, you started out by saying that it Sound like shabby online dealers !

You also said it "ONLY occurs when a key is later found to be illegal."

Sounds like shabby online dealers. This kind of expiration warning from Microsoft, only occurs when a key is later found to be illegal.
[...]
The seller can not help you out though. Even if they could, they would most likely deny a problem exists and that whatever is the problem, is your fault. [...]

You later omitted that even install on HP and DELL do this (so not ""ONLY occurs when a key is later found to be illegal", but you didn't volinteer that until I bother to defend my dealer who you assumed to pretty much be a dirtbag.(*)

* - Of course, I shouldn't say "dirtbag", because as stated on Brooklyn Nine Nine, "I don't see why being calling a dirt would be an insult. It's an important and effective part of a vacuum cleaner."

The OP actually reported in Post 16 that the problem was fixed by following the info in post 15.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
