16GB of RAM is not enough anymore?
Are we getting to the point where RAM of more than 16 gigabytes is required for having the best graphics in PC games?

yep seems so
might need to upgrade to at least 24gb ram soon

It's a bit weird because, how a well-programmed game have to require that much of RAM? Graphics currently are already at the peak level, there's doesn't seem to be point in making them even better because who will notice it? It's like with this example of Horizon something where graphics are so advanced they added a small "hairs" on main character face to be more realistic, I mean who cares about such nitty detail?

textures are getting bigger, more entities in a map, more npcs and so on. Remember everything in the digital world has to have a memory address. Newer games are allocating more space because they have more crowded maps, higher definition textures and more entities.
I consistently recommend 32GB of RAM for any kind of modern gaming rig, excluding creating/playing mainly indie games. If you have 16GB of RAM, and have 4 slots on your motherboard, then just get another 16GB kit of RAM (same brand and speed is highly recommended). If you can't get same brand, that's usually okay... As long as the speed and latency is the same.
I'm using 14GBs right now. In general I'd say we're easily moving toward 24GB being the recommended amount for anyone gaming, especially depending on the other things theyre doing. Keep in mind I can easily use 25GBs a day, which is why I have a lot more than that.

I recommend 16/24/32 depending on what people want to do, settings, mods, map sizes, other work etc.
I remember playing BF2 on 256MB of total system ram lol

I wouldn't consider anything under 32GB these days

It might not be that simple if you are already running XMP profiles on just two sticks of RAM because it supposedly puts more load on your CPU to have four sticks running overclocked, as opposed to just two.
I'm currently deciding between two 2x16 GB @ 3000MHz vs 4x8GB @ 3000MHz but I am worried that I am already pushing it with 2x8GB on my 10600K.

16gb is fine.
If you want 32, get 2x16
Wasnt the most a game recommended 12gb?
Dont remember ever have seen 16gb
waste of RAM , Windows uses it for disk cache . We should be allowed to set a limit for this .

JavaScript is likely the cause.
Any program that uses this as an important part of their ... whatever they are doing, is going to get bloated, simply because it also needs a browser, and a live JIT compiler with garbage collection, meaning the compiler decides when to unload pieces of memory.

Any calculator made with Atom for example, is at least 280MB (ram usage), even though it should be a few bytes. (windows's calc is just big due to the library hog and api load and stuff), but still 6MB in memory, not 200+

Like... compare RPG Maker MV to RPG Maker VX games in size they take on disk, and size in memory.

No it isn't due to graphics.
I mean there is more going on, Javascript based projects have 7000+ files if they are games, where otherwise they would have a lot less.

Graphics would use vram, not ram.

Edit: another problem is that there is no insentive to optimize GPU usage, CPU usage, RAM usage, etc
because people have more power on their machines lately anyway.
(and so they become lazier)
a lot of times they just import giant libraries and apis without knowing exactly what they do, they use like 2 or 3 features of that long list and leave the rest in.
All of it gets loaded
and what happens is that aside from it then becoming memory hogs, it creates backdoors which hackers abuse.

16 GB is "enough" until your personal experiences say it's no longer enough. When RAM consumption approaches 80% system-wide, then I'd say it's time. Many like me upgraded well before that point. If you're worried, you can monitor RAM use in-game. If you use Riva Tuner SS with HWiNFO, it's easily set in the RTSS tab in HWiNFO.

I now prefer 32 GB and don't foresee anything more. I don't have to monitor RAM use anywhere. It came about as a feast-or-famine thing. I started out with 4 GB memory on Windows 10 and thanks to a memory leak in addition, was hitting over 85% in use. Never again.

From 4 to 32....... i would say, 16 is still fine.
Even if you put 64GB we may see cached 32GB ... lol . Guys from Redmond , fix this nonsense !
I game with 16GB of system RAM, I don't see any problem with it yet. Sure, in the near future (perhaps 2-3 years from now), 32GB might be needed, but for now, 16GB is just fine....for me anyway.
