Higher hz is better for competitive but it is still nice for other games and windows environment too. Just moving the mouse cursor over the desktop will feel smoother @144hz.
4k will require a less powerful GPU than 1440p @144hz.
Even if you can't hit 144hz for all games/settings you'll still see a difference. You can use V-Sync to cap fps to 72fps the same as half refresh 72hz. Personally I leave V-Sync off simply because the screen refreshes that quick I rarely notice any tearing because the screen refreshes the images that quick.
1440 x 2560 = 3.6m x 144hz = 530m pps
2160 x 3840 = 8.3m x 60hz = 498m pps
close but 1440p144 is more
cpu load is 2.4x as much with 144hz vs 60hz
cpu creates the scene, gpu fills the pixels
if the cpu can handle 144+fps in games, go with a 1440p/1080p 144hz display
close but not quite there yet
even a 2080ti cant hold that yet, mins are still below 30@4k
if you lower settings it will be fine for either
but if the cpu is the limiting factor a 60 or 144hz display will not make as much of a difference
Edit.
Note that at high refresh 1440p the cpu has a solid impact on performance still unlike 4k which is still heavily gpu limited.
Obviously, 4K 144hz (native) monitors would be the icing on the cake, but unfortunately, the X27 sucks. You would have to be 100% crazy to waste over 2K on a monitor advertised as 144hz, but only does 98hz full quality..... and then put up with the annoying loud fan running at the desktop lol. Yeah, a great monitor (sarcasm)
As for 144hz for desktop use, yes, you’ll notice 144hz is smoother moving the mouse cursor around the desktop, but most people can adapt to whatever they’re using, and I use 144hz everyday and when I go back to my 4K 60hz monitor, it takes me like 5 minutes to adjust back to 60hz and then I’m fine with it. I think browsing the internet, reading forums etc... is nicer with 4K than 1440p, as the text is super sharp and clear with 27 inch 4K monitor, but still looks sharp on 1440p monitor. Anyone who recommends 1080p 144hz over 4K 60hz..... erm no way ! 1080p just looks so bad. There has to be that balance of everything being acceptable , and I think at the moment ,1440p 144hz is the perfect balance of looking nice and being smooth.
I think the problem with 4K is most people have experience with it on terrible cheap LG Tv’s with no G-SYNC and couch gaming on them from a distance.... Where on a small 27 inch monitor , you’ll be very close to it at a desk, you will appreciate that high resolution 163 PPI details much more.
I’ll say there is a big difference in response and lag between my XB271HK 4K G-SYNC monitor than any 60hz 4K TV. Both 60hz, but not the same, just like a cheap non G-SYNC 144hz isn’t the same as a high end G-SYNC 144hz. Moving the mouse cursor around desktop with the XB271HK compared to TV, you would think the monitor was 120hz and the TV was 60hz, every movement I make with the mouse happens instinct on screen with my XB271HK, where on Tv’s, it’s laggy and I get wrist ache just fighting with the mouse at the desktop. High end monitors are just much better. Tv’s are just bad for PC use. Tv’s don’t have G-SYNC, so you’ll be gaming at 30 fps instead of 60 fps on pretty much all games at 4K with a TV. You can fine tune a TV to the best it can be, but it’s never going to compete with an actual high end “quality” G-SYNC monitor.
Honestly I want the 3440x1440 200Hz monster (at a sensible price hopefully lol) more than 144 4k now :)

They need to update their website. Was curious how much so I clicked the where to buy option. All 4 pages list Maplins and nothing but Maplins.
That ultra wide 200hz monitor sounds good in theory, but is kinda pointless because 200 fps isn’t possible at that resolution on demanding games.
