Msi Rx480 gaming x throttling at 60c
Hi, since last month i am having this problem. Card used to run perfectly fine before that. Whenever it reaches 58-60c it starts to throttle increasing with the rise in temeperature. Also the gpu fans run at 85% automatically at these temperatures.The core clocks drop to as low as 600mhz if the temperature reaches 61c. I know this is not a software issue because i have tested this card on 2 diffrent pcs and have done all the things(gpu bios flash,increasing power limit etc etc). So what could be wrong with my gpu? Is it that the thermal paste is dried out? If so then why are my temps reported so low? Help please, thanks!

its the same thing man, its not a power issue. it ran fine for a year with stock voltage and also with +96mv when overclocking. i have done everything software related so i know its a hardware issue.
Did you do any physically changes? Are the fans still correct at rx480?

mine is 8gb by default
Yea but pike was asking

dont know what you mean by that but fans run at maximum speed at 60c automatically and no its not a custom fan curve, either that or face even worse throttling

Any changes at the card directly..replaced fans other thermal paste or anything else?

Unistall wattman, download gpu driver from msi gaming website.

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/support/Radeon-RX-480-GAMING-X-8G

Wattman is bad as Nvidia GeForce experience.

Only experts here, right?

1. Wattman is bad..., because? Aha. No point. It's ok.
2. You recommend an older driver on the MSI Website, although it's a 08 / 15 default driver from amd?
3. Uninstall Wattman? Great idea. Just remove the whole driver... then Wattman is gone away. Promised.

...

@TO
First i would check, if the card is acting differently, if you're using the "real" stock defaults recommended by amd. Hardware may experience aging. This goes for power supplys too.

But if you say, the gpu stays around 60 °C, then it looks like, as if you had configured this limit somewhere. Perhaps inside the bios? Or in the driver? Did you already tried a full uninstall in safe mode with DDU (guru3d)?

Me too has an MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8G, running at MSI default settings (just raised the temperature for the fans, lowered the voltage and lowered max rpms of the fans) - it's just too loud under normal conditions. ^^

bought a new power supply last week because i assumed my psu went bad but no change with
new power supply. i can make the card run at higher temperatures by forcibly lowering the fan speed. but the rise in temperatures causes the clock to drop even heavily. like from 1303mhz to 800mhz range. one more thing, if i overclock the card the computer freezes and loses display. this was not the case before, ran fine for a year with stock clocks and overclock

let's try this again.

1. open wattman
2. set frequency to -10
3. go to voltage control. any number more than 1000, set to 1000.
4. set power limit to 0.
5. apply settings and open afterburner.
6. run firestrike.

does speed drop or stay constant?

if it stays constant, you can gradually raise frequency and retest.
if it drops, then it's time to replace your card.

Something in your PC might be bottle necking the PCI-E slot;

Was this card ever used for mining?

no and i tested gpu on 2 diffrent computers. same issue on both. card runs steady at 1303mhz clock speed for like 10 seconds until it reaches 58-60c range

You can disable wattman by returning to factory defaults. Preferences/restore factory defaults.
Install afterburner and set up a fan curve. That's it. no muss no fuss.
You can even have it run 100% all the time and see what happens and adjust from there.
If that doesn't work consider your warranty.

In my experience this happens quite regularly with RX 580 and RX 480. 60'c is the lowest I've heard of, and it keeps throttling to maintain the temperature lower than that.

It's not the software issue, it's the hardware.

There are only 3 possible workarounds;

1. Lower the voltage and clock and lose around 15% or less of performance for a stable FPS. This only applicable if you just need to lower the clock by 150 MHz or less. Otherwise you will lose a lot of FPS like downgrading to R9 280X sub par graphics card.

2. Replace the thermal paste (might void warranty)

3. Send for RMA if eligible

Anyway do tell me what's your solution.

Thanks to this thread, i fixed this error on my msi rx 480. i did replace thermal paste and now everything works properly. Thanks!

my thee ish year old rx 480 had this problem. Replacing the thermalpaste caused it no not even reach 50c at max load at stock settings. So that stopped the throttelling. You do need to break a warrenty seal to do it and i didnt take the cooler completly of because of the connectors on both sides. Other than that, its super easy to do.

I'm having the same issue with mine, except mine throttles at 65C, not 61. This is ridiculous.
