I'm going to install the Ubuntu Xenial version (XenialPup 7.5)
Puppy Linux is for very low-end and old machines, which is why it's so bare-bone and basic.
If you have, do they run better than on Ubuntu and other distros?
And are there any games that run better on Puppy Linux than on Windows 10?
Performance will be about the same on all Linux distros. Almost all games will have better loading times on Linux then on Windows. A few games do perform better, for me Wolfenstein The New Order and Old Blood run significantly better on Linux then on Windows. On Windows it will struggle to maintain 30fps no matter the settings at 1080p, on Linux it's 60fps solid everything maxed 1440p ultra wide. This is because AMD drivers have issues with these games on Windows.
There are tricks you can do to make games run better on Linux. Like setting the CPU speed governor to performance, by default it's in powersave which hurts performance in many games. In some games this can be the difference between 30fps and 100fps.
Since you seem to jave exoeriance with lighter builds, what distro would you recomend for steam on very legacy hardware (think 98se era).
I have a number of legacy titles on steam that would run great with hardware from their eras but cannot due to steam drm. Would love a version of linux to add to the boot loader on my pentium mmx rig if it could launch steam...
But you can try,
Puppy Linux, Linux Lite, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian+XFCE/LXDE/i3-gaps. Or any distro which you build yourself from the ground up like Arch or Void.
I think modern versions of Ubuntu will be too much for that old hardware.
I have to go now, but I'll be back at 4:00 PM GMT tomorrow, but for now, I won't be able to read your reply until then. Thanks for your help!
playing games on old stuff doesnt compute
