How did you install Steam?

Install it via Quickpet.

I did install it via Quickpet. I'm going to switch back to Windows and see if a newer version of Puppy Linux will work.

I'm going to install the Ubuntu Xenial version (XenialPup 7.5)

Try Xubuntu instead. It's a lot easier to use, although it is heavier on the system.

Puppy Linux is for very low-end and old machines, which is why it's so bare-bone and basic.

I will try using Xubuntu now. Thanks for your help

Have you tried Steam on Puppy?
If you have, do they run better than on Ubuntu and other distros?
And are there any games that run better on Puppy Linux than on Windows 10?

I quickly tried pupy in a VM and also natively, it's complaining about missing dependencies after installing Steam. Something about libstdc++, the Puppy website and Wikka appear to be down right now. So I can't read their documentation on Steam. I tried a few things but no luck. I can probably figure out what is bothering it but I don't feel like troubleshooting right now.

Performance will be about the same on all Linux distros. Almost all games will have better loading times on Linux then on Windows. A few games do perform better, for me Wolfenstein The New Order and Old Blood run significantly better on Linux then on Windows. On Windows it will struggle to maintain 30fps no matter the settings at 1080p, on Linux it's 60fps solid everything maxed 1440p ultra wide. This is because AMD drivers have issues with these games on Windows.

There are tricks you can do to make games run better on Linux. Like setting the CPU speed governor to performance, by default it's in powersave which hurts performance in many games. In some games this can be the difference between 30fps and 100fps.

@Omega?

Since you seem to jave exoeriance with lighter builds, what distro would you recomend for steam on very legacy hardware (think 98se era).

I have a number of legacy titles on steam that would run great with hardware from their eras but cannot due to steam drm. Would love a version of linux to add to the boot loader on my pentium mmx rig if it could launch steam...

I doubt Steam and WINE will run on that hardware due to lack of proper graphics drivers.

But you can try,
Puppy Linux, Linux Lite, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian+XFCE/LXDE/i3-gaps. Or any distro which you build yourself from the ground up like Arch or Void.

I think modern versions of Ubuntu will be too much for that old hardware.

I tried installing Xubuntu onto my USB so that I can use my BIOS popup menu to boot from it rather than having Windows Boot Manager pop up all the time, however the installer said something about there being no partition and I had to fix it in the partition menu, but I couldn't find the partition menu. Where is the partition menu?

I have to go now, but I'll be back at 4:00 PM GMT tomorrow, but for now, I won't be able to read your reply until then. Thanks for your help!

Since Xubuntu doesn't work very well, and Linux Lite doesn't need much RAM, I will be using Linux Lite 3.8 instead because I want max performance.

I can imagine all sorts of libraries missing for steam install on Puppy. I managed to install steam on Devuan, but it was a major PITA hunting down all the missing libraries. For something like puppy, they may not even exist. If that's the case it would be impractical to build all the requirements.
puppys made to bring old stuff to life
playing games on old stuff doesnt compute
