I think it was Warcraft 2 back in the day, that had this test where you had to setup a few wonky things. After you sucessfully chosen the correct random settings a voice would say "your soundcard works perfectly" in an annoying british accent.
Ditched win95, tried win98, still didn't work but dxdiag did work this time and virtual-box hardware acceleration wasn't working, switched to directX software sound and it all works.
The test is DXdiag, for me it actually failed.. until I disabled hardware sound acceleration, which isn't needed at all given the power of modern CPUs.
