would a 2060 run well with an i5 6400?
im just about to buy a 2060 as an upgrade from my previous gpu and for a couple of weeks ive been trying to figure out if its a good idea to do that with my current cpu, ive made a discussion on something like this before and some people told me to just buy the best gpu i could find even if i had a crappy cpu but im unsure of whether thats a good idea or not.

Unless you plan on buying a new cpu I think a 2060 is as far up the gpu ladder as you want to go. If intending to replace the cpu then maybe something better, depending on the games that you want to play.

You could even drop down to a 1660ti.

It's more a "in the future" issue. The i5-6400 is a 4 thread cpu, so it's going to struggle a bit going forward. This site allows you see what sort of framerate you will get with various hardware combinations.

https://www.gpucheck.com/gpu/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060/intel-core-i5-6400-2-70ghz/

I don't know if the site is legit or not. It shows ACOd getting 40 fps at ultra. If the settings are reduced to medium then the fps is 95 at 1080p.

Say your desire was to play at ACOd at ultra, even with a better cpu you will be limited to 50 fps by the rtx 2060. (Click on the game link to see the cpu comparisons).

Personally I am happy playing at reduced graphics settings as I don't like godrays, blur, dof etc.

The key point is that the bottleneck with an i5-6400 and rtx 2060 will be the i5. So if sticking with the i5 stay with the 2060 or 1660ti. If planning to get a current gen cpu look at framerate benchmarks to see what you need.

thank you, i guess i will buy the 2060 as lowering the settings isnt really a problem for me at all unless its a low preset

No, anything above gtx 1060 or RX 580 would be a waste on that cpu

Opinion or fact?

https://www.gpucheck.com/compare-multi/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-vs-amd-radeon-rx-580-vs-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060/intel-core-i5-6400-2-70ghz-vs-intel-core-i5-6400-2-70ghz-vs-intel-core-i5-6400-2-70ghz/ultra

And if OP sets the bios to run the cpu in at turbo speed, the difference will be wider.

All those games are heavily CPU depending. Especially AC:O and AC:OCD literally require an 8 core CPU because of DRM to run smoothly. BF also highly profits from more cores

have to agree the old quads really don't do well with the cpu-heavy games these days - I ditched my 2500k after 8 years last black friday in favor of a 2600x and a 1070 ti and didn't look back. Was also very glad to make the 2500k my new plex server, can handle quite a few concurrent streams now!

If you do get a 2060, upgrade to at least a Ryzen 1600 (at the very least) w/ 16gb 3000 ram will be quite a difference.

If you have an adequate motherboard, you could always upgrade to an i7 6700k or something and Overclock, that would allow longer life for that system in addition to a better GPU.

If you dont have a good motherboard however then a good GPU will only get you so far, but it'll give you enough performance to save up for a future CPU/Board upgrade path.

There is no such thing as "too powerful GPU". If you CPU can only deliver say 30 frames, but your GPU can do much more - just raise the graphics and/or resolution to make a better use of your nice graphic card. That's what they did in XBOX One X for example.

i have probably got the worst motherboard in the world, i am thinking of getting a b450 motherboard though

It very much depends on what resolution you run at and what frame rate is acceptable to you, for me if frame rates that are on average 30+ then I'm happy but for some people any framerate even the 1% lows must be above 60fps. Consoles are typically 30fps, 60FPS is a lot smoother and of course some gaming monitors are 144fps and sometimes higher.

Since it looks like you're playing competitive multiplayer then you'd likely want over 60fps average. 1080p or 1440p or 4k? Youtube will have plenty of benchmarks of the 2060 especially Assassins Creed and Battlefield.

usually 1080p there isnt many 2060 benchmarks on titanfall 2 though, but yea, i dont go above 1080p
