How capable is a laptop with an AMD A8-3500M APU?
Hey guys, just picked up a very lightly used laptop that I noticed has a "discrete" Radeon HD 6620G, so I was thinking I might be able to go back and play some classics from a few years ago i.e. Far Cry 3, L.A. Noire, Deus Ex HR, Metro 2033, etc., even if it meant playing with lower settings and fps, but all of these games are getting like 10-20 fps with everything turned all the way down: unplayable. Am I expecting too much out of this machine? It just seems like it should be able to run these games at least 25-30 fps based on prior experience with other laptops. I already checked out the whole "core parking" thing and all of my cores are active, so it's not that.

Specs:
Acer Aspire 5560
Windows 10 Pro
AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 1500Mhz, 4 Cores, 4 Logical Processors
AMD Radeon HD 6620G, 512 MB DDR3, Core Clock 444MHz, Memory Clock 667 MHz, Total Memory Bandwidth 21.3 GB/s

Far Cry 3, L.A. Noire, Deus Ex HR, Metro 2033
Its not for gaming; its for simple stuff. Its like a $299 laptop

Why bother putting discrete graphics in if it does no good? I've seen similar laptops run better with integrated graphics.

Because it is good for displaying windows and playing films/youtube. It's all a laptop like that is designed and should be used for.

well I was able to play FarCry 3 ony an laptop with A6 and ATI 7620M on 15-20 fps in 720p. so most games you mentioned might run in lowest settings and resolution without problem but believe me when I say in the long term you not going to be happy with it as new stuff wont be playable at all and you would pretty soon thinking about upgrading again...

Well they run about the same as yours. A lot of areas in these games run ok, but smoke and fire effects seem to more or less kill all the frames. I never planned on it running current games, have a desktop for that.

Desktop AMD A8s are nice, but APU versions are garbadge. sorry im not an AMD cpu expert. i would recomend upgrading the memory to 8 to 12GBs and the old storage disk too a 256 or 500GB SSD if possible.

This. The Radeon 6620G is integrated graphics built into the CPU (or APU, which is what AMD calls their CPUs with integrated graphics). I own a ten year old laptop with better graphics than that.
