Nvidia dynamic contrast issue on ALL GAMES, dim to bright
I have looked everywhere online and have posted on multiple forums for a solution to this issue but have had no luck. I am having an issue primarily in first person games where the screen brightness will change frequently based on movement OR the lighting of the room. If I stand in front of a light, the rest of the screen will go incredibly dim. Then I move away from the light and the brightness goes back up but it is delayed which causes a weird dimming/brightness effect that occurs constantly. It also happens If I'm moving the camera too rapidly. It is making me motion sick in games with more movement and I am beginning to become unable to play my games without the constant dimming and brightening. It is driving me CRAZY.

I am running a GTX 1060 (6GB), I have already changed all color settings in the nvidia control panel to FULL dynamic. I have disabled adaptive brightness in windows (it is NOT a windows issue). I have tried on several different monitors (it is NOT a monitor issue). I have also been advised to disable DYNAMIC CONTRAST, which is NO LONGER an option in the Nvidia control panel. Is there a way to disable this in the registry settings? I am almost certain this is what's causing it but any help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to enjoy my games again without the contrast strain on my eyes. Hope I posted this in the right place.

1060 or 660? 660 was only 2gb AFAIK.

sorry, yea it's a 1060 I'm having the issue with, my other computer has a 660

also its paired with an Intel i5 6600, 16GB ram, and Windows 10 OS

if anyone does manage to read this, here is a video of what is happening:

NOTE: video lags because of the capture software I used but there is no real-time lag or frame rate drops. Running a solid 60+ fps on all games I'm experiencing the issue with on Ultra.

I am getting the same issue with both an MSI Twin Frozr GTX660 on a PC with a Corsair VX550 and an Asus GTX 1060 Turbo (blower card) on a PC with a Fractal Design Integra SFX 450W. The video capture makes it look like I'm getting low FPS but I am actually getting high FPS on all games on Ultra settings. Things are running beautifully on both rigs aside from the lighting issues. It is primarily occuring near light sources or sudden changes in lighting.

also, no overclocking whatsoever both CPUs and GPUs are locked

That's a speficic effect in The Turing Test. It's not GPU or monitor related, it's the game doing that. Dissabling post process effects probably dissables it (along other effects).

it should be a relatively instant transition though, right? That slow crawl back up in lighting from the dim blackness you see in the video is in real time. The brightening is severely delayed after the screen dims. Some games, like Gone Home dim and brighten every time I move the camera. Farcry 3 for example, dims objects and surroundings when moving the camera regardless of lighting. It seems to be triggered by motion and/or lighting. If you go from a bright room into a darker room or a room more dimly light too suddenly, you will be in almost complete darkness for a couple seconds. its more noticeable in walking simulators and first-person exploration games with a lot of lighting effects.

Yes, in this game the transition is annoyingly slow. It's supposed to mimic how our eyes work, but in this game it's way too exagerated and slow, making it look more like a camera (which may make it actually accurate. You're a robot I guess? I haven't played it much yet).

There is an eye-adaptation setting in the BaseScalability.ini - at ultra post-fx it is r.EyeAdaptationQuality=2 - I believe this is the effect responsible. You might be able to override this individually. Personally I was looking for a way to turn AO off separately - it ruins my framerate. I'll muck about with it tomorrow, unless you beat me to it :p

is that a global nvidia setting or a setting with the game?

I am still having this issue with multiple games, not just this one. Also, it is not dependent on light source but that does seem to exaggerate it. I cannot seem to pinpoint it but it does seem like it is auto-contrasting and it is noticeable in MOST games I play. It is not specific to the turing test, I just added the video as an example.

Also, I'm not sure why this was moved to general discussion for the turing test when it is a hardware/software issue I'm having with all games I'm playing. This pretty much guarantees I will find no resolution for it here and every other forum I post on I get cookie cutter responses. I do appreciate the replies that have been left here though so thank you. It's just frustrating that across the internet with all it's vast information and infinite sources of knowledge, I am unable to resolve a GPU issue on a custom build that cost me over a grand; an issue that can probably be achieved through some type of nvidia registry edit.

I should mention I have found other forums with users experiencing the same issues. The resolution to this usually seems to be disable the auto-contrast or dynamic contrast. The problem I'm having is I have no such setting in the Nvidia control panel.

Most games in the recent years have a similar effect. It's not any setting you can enable/dissable anywhere. The game engine is doing it. Some games may allow you to dissable it, but then bright areas will look too bright and you won't see a thing in dark zones.

Click on Start, type 'services', Right-click and choose 'Run as administrator'. Click on 'Intel(R) HD Graphics Control Panel Service' from the list. In the General tab click on 'Startup type', select 'Disabled', OK, and restart the computer. Also, you might have to do this again if the windows updates your Intel graphics driver.

In case someone wiil search online and end up here like me.
Have the same problem after upgrade my 970 to 2060S and clean driver instalation.

  1. Go to nvidia conrol panel
  2. change resolution
  3. scroll down to 3. Apply the following settings
  4. change Output dynamic range to "Full"

If problem pop up again after driver update just do this again.

Finally found it on mine, it's a different issue that does the same for me, use your monitor's controls, and in the picture/image/color section change the preset, from things like "cinema/movie (even gaming mode has this issue and won't stop adaptive brightness even if you change color settings and disable it)" to custom, set up your own contrast, brightness etc. and it'll stop adaptive brightness.
