Ability to give nicknames to your friends

Steam allows changing your nickname, which I think is a good thing and should be there in other services too! It's just that some kids keep changing it all the time, along with their profile picture, up to the point that I can no longer tell who they are... at least until I look at their profile page and try to piece it together from the various clues that may or may not be there. A bit tedious.

As said, I do like having the option to change the nick, so I suggest doing something similar to how phones do it. That is, you could give your own nicknames to friends, and that nickname would override their own but only for you. Nobody else would even be able to see what nicknames you have given to people. And by default you would of course see the nickname the user has chosen himself.

In your friends list, beside their name, click the little arrow dropdown and the option to give them a personal nickname is there...I know exactly what you mean, and I love this feature 'cause it helps keep track of who people are! :P

Excellent! :D I tried looking everywhere on people's profile pages, didn't think of checking the Friends list window... thanks for the tip!

Oh yes! There's a lot of tweaking here and there, I do think it is pretty complex at first. It was a complete minefield when I first engaged the UI..still is, but I'm sure Valve is trying to make it easier to use...if they can spare the time from making tf2 items :P

I'd rather steam filled in that nickname to what their steam name is when they become a friend because sometimes people change their name and I'm like who the ♥♥♥♥ is this person on my friend list?

Yeah, but it seems when you are in leaderboards (for ex wrc6) and post the screenshot, you also post the screenshot with the nickname (not steam) . So if smbd have "not very friendly nickname" he will see it

Have you looked at how old this thread is and how old that reddit post is?
