There is also the issue of viruses being delivered in this way. Steam would be able to be held liable at that point too.
Too many security risks involved.
There are many file sharing sites and other ways to send files to a friend. Steam doesn't need ot be invilved in it.
Actually I wasn't talking about the file names, its more like "XxRandomPlayerxX is on my blocked players list, he can't send me any files."
I'm from my knowledge some filesharing sites don't allow .exe files. I should have elaborated a bit more. I meant this in a way of quickly sharing pictures that are not screenshots or other small files, but also a quicker way to share screenshots without having to go to their profile first.
I don't really want to use an outside example, but I know that Skype takes up much more bandwith than steam chat, I rarely and don't like using it for online games with friends. Skype itself already has a filesharing feature, haven't heard about any problems with it, unless I don't been paying enough attention of course.
I guess that does sound like it sums what I'm trying to say. But being able to send other files would be a great bonus
Other files could pose a security risk though. If they are .zip, they can contain anything in them and you won't know untill you open it.
I can understand the convenience of it, but it would require Valve to either host the file (even temporarely) or create a direct link between you and another person. Both have their own, unique problems and risks.
I do understand the security risks, I can definitely settle for just being able to put a image into the chat window.
You want another way to lose your account?

Note that to be clear the chat does not 'spread' malware
Its that the link sent, goes to scr, which windows will atuomatically exectue because windows sucks that way. Its not really a 'steam chat' issue but more "great windows executes scr file automatically because... why?"
Yes. I forgot to mention that the action of the user is why things happen. And no one can trust others enough to not click random links
I would like a feature on Steam to order pizza because I am too lazy to open my app that does that, so please Valve add this.
