+1 for xmpp and all that.
Edit: A steam chat protocol <-> XMPP transport would be enough to fix most features. That way they could keep their internal protocol if they want.
That library uses the steam-mobile API so they saw me as "Online from mobile device" .
But as I said, its kinda buggy (I get JSON errors in console and sometimes odd usernames show up in the roster)
So I support the idea to switch to XMPP for their chat protocol.
We must make a petition, guys!

One thing I'd especially like being added, other than if interoperability was possible, would be encryption. So many accounts have gotten hijacked due to valuable items, you simply cannot trust your unencrypted communication to stay private.
