STEAM 2014 Requested Functional Updates By Community
This used to be a place of civil suggestions and conversation. There has been way too much arguing about ideas and at each other that it has made me sick. So like most things that get ruined, all good things must eventually come to an end. Thanks to all that contributed and helped shape Steam into what it is today.

What I want to see is in the Steam Overlay (Yes the overlay in the games, not the client itself) is to be able to Pin other windows to it instead of having to exit full screen to access them. Example: Skype, so many people use to when playing a steam game. And I don't just mean we can have skype pinned, but we can chose open windows to be pinned to the steam overlay.

Very unlikely to happen. Apart from the fact that it just doesn't work like that, having Skype in the overlay would make the overlay much more resource demanding, and it's already pretty heavy and broken by itself.

A perfect solution for this would be a skype integration instead of the Steam voice chat, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Make seperate notifications for when you're in game and not in game, this would be great

ATTN all active steam traders! Please add this idea to your wishlist and help put the pressure on Valve to rectify this problem / feature: I just had another trade invalidated because of this issue and I expect to have countless more happen until this is resolved.

If I am a buyer, for example, and I have several trades on trade sites listing items I am buying, and I get several TO's from different users for these items. If the users have done the instinctive thing, and selected the first batch of metal in my backpack they come across, then this is what happens:

If I have 5 TO's, and each one of them happens to have selected the same piece of reclaimed metal from my BP, then when I accept the first TO, the other 4 TO's will be automatically invalidated, and there is no function to either 1) automatically reselect replacement metal or items, OR 2) to allow me to send a counter offer.

I'm not big into trading and I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Can someone put this in simplier terms?

Folks out there are using in-game TF2 and in-game keys from same game to trade for things. Sometimes for in-game hats, other times for things like Steam gift keys for games.

These items are absolutely commodities. One of them is functionally identical to any of thousands of others that might be in a player's inventory or on the market.

Steam's trading treats them as unique items. So what's happening to him is that most folks who trade with him trade for the first few pieces of metal or keys in his inventory. Even if he's got 20 or 30 of the thing, any other trade that picks one of the same pieces of metal is now invalid because that item's no longer in his inventory. Even though he's got several more that are absolutely identical to it in purpose, functionality and value.

REMOTE DESKTOP!

It can be done using Steam In-Home Streaming feature but from anywhere.

Pleeeease join this group to show support for the idea.

Well its great that you guys made that Steam Music feature. Its still in its early stages, but its good you guys implemented it.

But here's one that a lot of people HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR A LOOOOONG TIME :D

You know what it is?

Steam Client THEMES!
  • Integrate it into the client as an official option in the settings menu. Not the regular need to do this and that and do at your own risk stuff.
  • Steam has developed the Community Workshop. What better way to add themes into Steam than to let these be made by the community!
  • A good one too is to add options into the themes menu, something like color scheme, custom fonts styles and sizes, and other stuff.

I'd really appreciate this, Valve :)
Steam :"small mode" doesn't transition to "large mode" correctly.

If i right click on a steam friend to open his profile while in steam "small mode", it will simply open the last page I was on in "large mode". So i then have to right click again to actually open the profile.

Same goes for game forums, etc. anything opening from steam "small mode" doesn't open, it simply goes to "large mode" and nothing else.
Can't remember if I mentioned this, but it's a no brainer for me.

Place a slider bar bandwidth throttle (for downloads) at the top or bottom of the Main Steam window. Having to go deep into the settings to change the BW is a TOTAL PITA. 5 minutes with a GUI tool ought to have this one patched up, and it will save some of us a lot of headaches.

Btw, it would be nice to have an auto throttle to limit to a percentage that will auto throttle back based on net usage of other apps. I could set a range like 5%-50%, or I could set a buffer, so Steam would use 100% but thottle back to 50% when other apss hit 50% or higher, etc.

Ya we have your first part in the guide already and that would be a great addition. However I think with the percentage you are starting to dig too deep all this can be accomplished via your router. Because of this I think Valve has no plans to add anything more than the basic controls they added for bandwidth and download limits.

Like when you get VAC Banned it would be nice if you could still trade items from that game and sell them. When looks how much money have you spend for that game so it would be fair if those items could be still traded and sold.

The thing is the VAC is there to punish the user, in these case the user may have spend he gets noting else, and yes he loses on it but that is the point, so i really do not agree
I don't want the video player muted. I'm used to using YouTube where it remembers the last volume I had set. In Steam when I start the client it ALWAYS assumes I'm at work and need the volume muted.

Suggestion, only mute the volume automatically when the user sets the option to autoplay videos. If I clicked play, I probably want to see the video and hear the audio. Resetting my video player's audio to muted every time I start up is really annoying, and often makes me miss the beginnings of videos and have to restart them. Horribly annoying.
I would like to have steam remember you position in a list when you go back to a page.
For example say I am paging through the new releases on the featured page and three pages in I see something I like, if I click on it and decide I like it but I want to keep browsing the list of new games I’ll click back to go back to the list. But when it goes back to the list it resets my position back to the first page and also resets me to top selling games instead of the new games list I was on. This is annoying and more than once I have given up in disgust and closed steam because I am tired of clicking a bunch of times because of the lack of what I consider a basic browsing functionality. Additionally it appears that this functionality is broken everywhere there is a list on steam.
I would like the Library dropdown to also include "unistalled" sort option.

**WISHLIST button/feature**
This suggestion is because I CAN'T wishlist Red Orchestra 2: Digital Deluxe edition

I hate to be 'that guy', but like many others, I got the RO2 Multiplayer for free during the free-weekend-event (~April 24th, 2014).

But the point is, the way [each] store page is set up, you can't wishlist a game you already 'own.' Now I can't watch [RO2] for a sale & that is bad business, because I may not know when it's on sale.

What Tripwire did with this 'SPLIT a game into 2, then say you own it, when you really own one half (stand-alone multiplayer which you're getting it for free)' thing is a unique situation & it really has exposed how the Wishlist feature could be better.

Valve, isn't there anything you can do about this??
SUGGESTION:
Maybe just let us wishlist a game (aka. page) we already own if there are multiple purchasable items on the page.

Bad business? Why would you need to buy it again?
