I am sure this has been asked before in disparate forum topics, and even in this 2013 enhancement request topic, but I am in extreme need of a custom sorting function for my library. Steam is my primary launcher for my 200+ Steam games and my 400 + non steam games (GOG, Retail, etc).
Request:
A "Sort Name" field on the properties menu for all games (native Steam and non Steam).
Functionality:
We could use this field to custom sort games. For example, take the Company of Heroes series. It is currently displayed by name and not by the order the games were released.
Current Display Order:
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes 2
Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor
Desired Display (Sorted) Order:
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor
Company of Heroes 2
I would use the "Sort Name" field as follows to display the games in my preferred order:
"Company of Heroes - 01" for the game Company of Heroes
"Company of Heroes - 02" for the game Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts
"Company of Heroes - 03" for the game Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor
"Company of Heroes - 04" for the game Company of Heroes 2
Alternatively, other users may prefer to use the year or some other sorting standard:
"Company of Heroes (2006)" for the game Company of Heroes
"Company of Heroes (2007)" for the game Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts
"Company of Heroes (2009)" for the game Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor
"Company of Heroes (2013)" for the game Company of Heroes 2
Regardless of how an end user utilizes this field, the ability to sort games and display them in the order the customer sees fit would be the polish that the steam library needs, and in my opinion, for larger collections, requires. I want to use Steam for my PC games like I use XBMC for my media. Simple. Logical. Reliable. Customizable.
Thanks for the consideration Steam and Steam Community!
The "category" option is nice for other purposes, but DOES NOT solve this problem and is only a band aid approach at best. I use the category feature to sort my Win/Mac games, or to segregate "garbage" games that came in a bundle that I'll never play or don't need installed.
However, it would also be nice to be able to edit the name of both native steam games, as well as non steam games. We are only currenlty allowed to rename games if they are non steam.
My "Sort Name" field idea would work in concert with a "Name" or "Title" field that is customizable as well.
In the end, this would allow us to both SORT and NAME games as we see fit. Call me OCD, but Steam does not have a naming standard. Just look at the Star Wars games. It is a mix of dashes and spaces and restricted symbols...I want my library to be perfectly standardized.
2. Ability to buy multiple copies with one purchase. (For example, I wanted PAM Chaos DLC for myself and my boys, what a pain. 3 seperate credit card transactions for $.49 each.
3. Probably already mentioned, but enough infrastructure support to handle big sales and holidays. It took so long to get Left 4 Dead 2 free on Christmas day that I thought I was going to miss it! :)
But I can't believe no one suggested a Widescreen Mode (for regular Steam, not Big Picture).
Just looking at the Steam Hardware Survey you can see that the vast majority of people use a widescreen monitor.
It always feels like half of my screen is being completely wasted...
We've got one leading to notifications, but those don't cover all.
We've got one leading to our own comments, but same thing.
As a web developer I am constantly clearing my browser cache, cookies, history, etc. Practically every time I need to log into Steam, I have to go check my email to get the verification code.
It would be nice if:
1. Steam didn't rely on a browser cookie for this functionality.
2. Steam offered a way to view the computers I've told it to trust, with the ability to remove them (I'm sure I have hundreds).
