There should be free speech on a public forum
There should be free speech on a public forum

This is a public forum.

Furthermore I notice posts are getting deleted but even more deleted than before, to the point where you dont even see them in your own post history. :cryptothink: :winter2019surprisedsnowman: :steamfacepalm: :steamsad:  :steamsalty:

People seem to think that the First Amendment protects them completely, meanwhile public nuisance and disturbing the peace bylaws exist.

Usually it isn't until they reach the find out portion of FAFO , that they seem even care about it in the first place.

They are.

Your 'rights' on the forums extend as far as the ToS. Doesn't matter how strict those terms are, your rights end where they start.

Because, despite being public forums, they are still owned and operated by a private company.

You're changing the definition of public forum and than saying 'look, if we change the definition, I'm right'.
Not changing the definition of anything.

That isn't what 'public' means in the context of forums.

How did I change the definition?

That doesn't make it a private forum.

It's a privately owned public forum.

You know how you can tell if you're in a public forum? No one can throw you out. It's why the religious guy with the loud speaker gets to stand outside city hall and yell abuse every Friday night even though almost everyone hates him.
I don't hate him. The funny part is even on the times where he's wrong, without fail the guys who get upset and try to debate him are even worse informed. Truly American entertainment.

my time is better spent being mad and improving myself.

I guess you can add convincing yourself that you are a victim and whining about it on the Internet to that list. Something to do between rage-sessions and the gym I guess.
Interesting that OP left but this post is still here.

Steam is a public forum but owned by a private company. They reserve the right to ban anyone.

Now my work for instance has a private forum that you can't view without registering and being given an account, that is private

Public spaces still have rules and people can be banned from public places if they don't follow the rules

As far as I can tell, there aren't strong limits against speech on the Steam forums. People are generally free to discuss ideas, even subversive ones. The rules are mainly there to maintain a certain amount of civility, and people who complain about "muh freeze peach" aren't so much concerned about their speech, so much as their ability to be rude and discourteous towards others. They also usually aren't interested in actual discussion, and they tend to confuse disagreement with harassment.

I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express.

Anyone taking a look at the Steam rules can see they basically can be summed up in "Don't be a tool" Even with the former rules the biggest no-no was "We don't talk politics/religion on the dining table".

They've never been severely restrictive rules. Just be nice to each other and be constructive when discussing things.
already drink your free water from blue sky, right?

There has been a definition of public forum for hundreds, if not thousands of years. You're changing it to argue that a privately owned company shouldn't be able to kick you out for not following their rules.
It is a forum that is accessible to the public. It is not the public forum. Valve can kick people out and no court has ever said they can't.

I'm not arguing that at all.
I think you misunderstood what free speech means since you are banned.

Wow so people would rather demand free speech from a private forum provider than to work to ensure free speech in their society.

Priorities these days are truly confusing.
