Valve intern idiot behind "Overwrite my subscriptions" workshop button should get fired
Why the hell would any one create this button when we already have separate "Unsubscribe from all mods" in workshop item list? HOLY :poop: this is the biggest trap valve ever rolled into workshop...
NEVER PRESS THAT BLUE BUTTON! IT WILL ERASE EVERY MOD YO HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION!
i just wanted to download new custom maps to play with friends in L4D2 but now i gotta find every 100 mods i had installed before that because they are gone...AND I CAN'T F***ING CANCEL IT.

The reason for that button (as I understand it, anyway) is to make it easily switch between sets of mods which you have installed. Valve added functionality to the client to help with this too. I can definitely imagine scenarios in which you might want to do this (perhaps, for example, you have one set of mods which add quality-of-life stuff to vanilla gameplay, but you also sometimes play a total conversion mod which isn't compatible with the quality-of-life mods).

Although yes, I can see the angle that buttons which with a single click irrevocably erase user data (in this case, the list of mods you were previously subscribed to) is not ideal. There ought to be some way to undo the operation. My first thought is that the mods which are overwritten ought to be saved to a special (always private) collection, which you can then use to restore the overwritten mod subscriptions.
I LIKE it. Definitely a power user, edge case function that not everyone would use. I miss when Valve would do stuff like this. Now you ask for functionality like this and everyone tells you it would just create help desk tickets and people wouldn't understand it so you cannot.

It is a REALLY destructive change to offer on a main button though.

I THINK it asks for confirmation at least.

I tried it out. From a collection page like this one: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=3135470026

If you click on "+ Subscribe to all" a dialog window appears:

Subscribe to all
Do you want to add the items in this collection to your subscriptions, or overwrite your subscriptions to contain only items from this collection?

[Add Only] [Overwrite My Subscriptions] [Cancel]

The [Add Only] button is green, the [Overwrite My Subscriptions] button is blue, the [Cancel] button is grey. If you click the blue [Overwrite My Subscriptions] button, your existing mod subscriptions are erased with no way to stop it.

So, I reckon there's a few things which could be improved in the UX here:

1a. Buttons which cause irreversible data loss should be red, or have some other visual indication that they're dangerous.
1b. After clicking [Overwrite My Subscriptions], there should be a confirmation dialog (with a "don't ask again" checkbox)

OR

2. The erased subscriptions should be backed up into a private collection (called something like "Recently Overwritten") so that they can be restored. This would make the operation non-destructive, so there'd be no need for 1a or 1b. A dialog (with a "don't show again" checkbox to tell the user about the "Recently Overwritten" collection would be good here.

Granted, these are good points. I'm certainly not saying it can't be improved and that's good design standards. Red for destructive options.

I think user error should have been taken into account for this case. Anything that deletes should not be anywhere near something that adds. I misclick things all the time out of habit or bad impulse or flat out misunderstanding.

I’m certainly glad I haven’t found myself a victim of this case. I think the button should be in a different spot.

So it's Valve's fault you pressed a button you guessed at? I mean no one made you press it. No one forced you to guess. No one stopped you from looking it up if you didn't know.
The point is it's right next to the other one that people mean to press and it has no confirmation pop-up or anything. Such a stupid useless feature
