Let only owners of the game rate reviews (or alternate method)
So I had a bunch of reviews up that were friends-only (forgot to make them public after the review update). Apparantly, one of my friends decided to downvote all of them (note: these were friend-only reviews) for a reason that I can't say. Now if someone checks my reviews, they're labeled as "0% found this helpful," which most people would just automatically label as a trash review. What makes me really mad is the fact that my friend does not even own most-if not all-of the games.

I think letting only users of the game rate other reviews would be a good idea. If you don't own the game, then you can't really judge it (of course people will say "that game looks bad," but I think the only real way to judge a game is to actually play it). Leaving it the way it is could lead to: "this guy made fun of me! Let's downvote all of his reviews!"

If this isn't good enough, I think a better solution would be to have the same rating system that guides/workshop items have. Meaning the actual "rating" of the review won't show up until it gets enough votes.

I agree on the "need minimum ratings", although I know I'm in the minority.
As for the ratings made by users of a game, I can see the usefulness of it, but personally, do you really need to own the game to downvote a "this game is ***" ? I'd downvote such a short and unthroughful review, but that is just me. I'd agree on restrictions, though.
And of course, don't restrict anyone to flag a review.

That's not the point of rating a review, though. Here's an example:
0 of 1 people (0%) found this review helpful
Recommended
0.2 hrs on record
Haven't really played: can't really say anything about it ATM.

Was this review helpful? Yes No
It's a review that recommends a game even though it consists of nothing but 'I haven't played this game and thus can't review it.' That's not helpful, and deserves to be marked as such by anyone who reads it.

This makes more sense. Are people dismissing low vote 0% reviews that much, though?

The up and down votes are for how helpful people found the review. If someone bought a game or didn't buy it, then they would rate those review what helped them make that decision appropriately.

Limiting it to only those who own the game would defeat the purpose of having this kind of review system. It could even allow the system to always be in favor of the developer, regardless of how many people decided not to buy it due to bad reviews.

I couldn't agree more with you on this one.

If you're talking about that Realm of the Mad God review I made, that was one of the reviews I made before the review update. I was going to eventually play it and edit the review, but honestly never saw the chance (keep in mind that it was tagged as friends-only).

While I can easily understand people downvoting that, I just think it's unfair for someone to downvote all of the other reviews that I actually put effort into just because of some argument. While Totoro makes a very good point, I still think the last idea I mentioned in my OP would be very beneficial.

Completely irrelevant, but that Realm of the Mad God review was tagged as friends-only: how did you see it? Are all of my reviews showing up as public?

Yes, but my point was along the lines of totoro's post: your initial suggestion ignores what a rating of a review is for. Whether somebody has bought a game or not shouldn't affect how persuasive or helpful or whatever they find a review.

idk. i was curious as to whether it really showed '0/1found this helpful', and lo, there were 17 reviews on your profile. Checking now, the realm review has vanished. Spooky.

That was a bit of a bug that may still be effecting the Review Beta. May want to double check and see if you can mark it as friends only again.

Good suggestions. Perhaps removing the downvote would be better. A decent review will accumulate likes as time passes, whereas a sucky review that is nothing to write home about simply won't.

In fact, perhaps removing the voting system altogether would be best. If readers so desperately want to express their opinion, let them leave comments instead! An eloquent review deserves at least a well-written response, rather than a one second effort that is clicking a like/dislike button.

Who needs thumbs up/down that are inaccurate at worst, and uninformative at best anyway?

That would be for me the best solution, but I remember being told to "fix it before ditching it".
I guess we can still give a try before effectiveley suggesting to take it down, even if I have no hope left for the review rating.

In a way, I both agree and disagree. Sad to say but this seems better than my suggestion.

That sucks,I had a few angry souls do that to my reviews too. Just Downvote all of them for no reason. lol

I believe its already required to have atleast played the game on Steam (not own), ie free weekend play for free whatvever. If you already own the game why are you trolling others reviews anyway? lol
Removing the Downvote system is a good idea. I had the same suggestion myself.:beatmeat:
