Steam overlay notifications to display only once
I'm a long time user on steam and I've been playing a lot of Dota 2 in the last few years. Now here's the thing: Because I get so many steam chat messages, I had to disable all of the overlay notifications and have to manually open the overlay every now and then to check if I received a message, otherwise playing games like Dota 2 gets pretty frustrating when you get spammed with links and text.

What I'd like to see is an option to give me a small notification that triggers once someone writes to me. I don't want to see every chat message they type pop up, I just want a small notification that says something along the lines of "You received a new message". From then on, it shouldn't give me any more notifications until I open the overlay once and close it again, or click through all the blinking chat tabs.

Sometimes I get too immersed into the game that I accidently forget to check the in-game overlay and I don't want to make people feel like I'm ignoring them anymore. The message notification sound is too annoying (and also always triggers every time you receive a new chat message).

I don't know whether this has been suggested before or not, but I'd really like to see this coming to Steam sometime soon.

actually there is options for that already, while not perfect it can use some enhancements

go to notfications & sounds in the friends section under settings just untick display notification or sound whichever you prefer, and select whatever kind of settings you want under "Flash window..."

Yeah, it's close to what I want, however the flash window option is for when you're not in-game. Basically, I'd like to get a notification as soon as I receive a message while in-game, however it should disappear again and just let me know that someone wrote something to me.

For example: Rather than getting a notification/sound every time you receive a message, I'd like it to show me the notification only once or play the sound only once (no matter how many messages follow afterwards) until I open and close the overlay again, so I know that someone wrote to me.

ah i see. I know what you mean, it is possible, but that will most likely happen in a huge steam program update.

I really do like the idea, and do agree with it
Have few friends we sometime chat (for the fun or something) with letters, then allowing these will sure help to have less bugging noise XD
